My dad used to work Civil Service and brought home an old Civil Defense food kit that had to have been 25 years+ old. My daughter loved the graham crackers wrapped in brown wax paper. In those days (Early 80's) a kid could ride in the back of my truck with a shell and carpet kit. She'd happily munch away as we headed out on a road trip to visit Grandma. Now she's a priss butt and would wince at this story.

Thanks for the replies. I think I just bought to many when I bought these. Sounds like they would be fine in a dire emergency, I’ve been slowly accumulating freeze dried stuff so I’ll just give these to any of my friends that want them

I'd say 5 years is the sweetspot, but there are many articles and videos about people eating stuff 20+ years old and doing fine. So I'd say even if you bought way too many, it's not a big deal

My 'dire emergency' pack are lifeboat rations. I mean they're basically cardboard anyway, just to keep you alive for a bit. Don't need to pretend to be real food tbh.

I've still got 13 cases of MRE's from Hurricane Ike in 2008 stored in my air-conditioned garage. Yes, the cheese whiz is now brown. Yet, much of it is still edible. Especially the M&M's! My granddaughter takes the Tabasco to school to put on her cafeteria meals. I won't use the condoms though...

I’ve eaten a lot of MREs in my younger days. Ham and escalloped potatoes, chicken and rice, ham omelette were among my favorites.

Well, one day I’m at the local junkyard looking through the parts cars. I happen to find a new MRE that I hadn’t tried yet…Beef Stew! I thought oh wow this will be awesome. So later that day I ate it for lunch. It tasted great.

The only problem was that it apparently had been stored under less than ideal conditions. I’m guessing that sitting under the front seat of a car in the hot Sun degrades the qualities quickly.

An hour after my beef stew meal, my stomach starts gurgling. VIOLENTLY. I got sicker than sick off that.
