So I'm getting a Tacoma in February and will be hitting the trails in Michigan, which aren't overly rocky and have mostly dirt, some rocks and little hills, and fairly well compressed sand. I've been thinking that I need a TRD Off-Road for this, but I'm not sure that the traction control, MTS and rear-locker will be needed in my region. Plus I've heard a few accounts of folks using the SR5 out west where it is more technical than most Michigan trails. The only thing I'd be concerned about with an SR5 is the lack of skid plate.

Would a TRD Off-Road be better or could I just save some money and (like a friend suggested) get an SR5 with some beefy tires, instead?

    They're all solid trucks.

Get the OR if you like the gadgetry better, want a locker, and prefer a blacked out interior.

Get the SR5 if none of the above matters.

Put the same set of tires on any trim and they all pretty much perform similarly.

I’ve got an SR5 and I like it. I think it’s totally sufficient for the use you describe. I’ve gone hundreds of miles off road in Death Valley with it with no issues (with load c all-terrains). Also been around Michigan a bit, including the UP.

If I was to do it over again I might pony up the extra for the off road model, just in case. But I have not been disappointed with my truck at all. I also have the option of aftermarket locking differential(s) should I choose to add it later.

That all being said the used market is crazy right now and I might be able to trade in my SR5 and upgrade for little out of pocket cost. Even still I haven’t been compelled to really look into it.
