Hello, can someone with an auto ‘98 2.7l 4x4 please provide measurements for the transmission dipstick? Searched high and low for the correct dipstick, come to find out Toyota discontinued them  so i’m resorting to making my own :)

If you could provide the total length, bottom to the top of the “cold” level, and bottom to the top of the “hot” level marks, or just all 4 markings lol. Thanks in advance!

Upon further research, that p/n belongs to any auto 4 cylinder 4x4 between 98-02. Not sure why it changes for 03-04 since the only difference should be the the electronic drive-by wire but still the same internals and oil pan.

Anyone with a 98-02 4-cyl 4x4 care to chime in? Help would be very much appreciated :)

Thanks for the response @O’Silver_Taco! Just to confirm, this came out of a 3rz 4x4? Only reason I ask is because I’ve read that the 4wd dipstick is longer so i just want to be sure.

Would you take a used one? There is a junkyard with all Toyotas here in commiefornia that will send you one.

    Update: Did some shopping!

The premise: I did a 4wd swap to my 02 2.7l DC prerunner but didnt remember to pull the transmission dipstick. Thought it was no big deal until i found out they don’t sell them anymore:annoyed:.

So, because Toyota discontinued the transmission dipsticks or “gage sub-assembly” for any 98-02 4wd with the 2.7l engine, I decided to buy two other ~similar~ dipsticks to see their compatibility and their differences.

I ordered gage-assembly pn: 35103-35470 which belong to 03-04 2.7l 4wd tacoma. For some reason it’s a different pn for the 03-04, idk why.

    and I ordered pn: 35103-35350 which belong to 98-02 3.4l 4wd tacoma

In this photo, lined up from top to bottom, is a 2wd dipstick that came with my 2002 DC prerunner, the 03-04 2.7l 4wd dipstick is in the middle, and a 98-02 3.4l 4wd dipstick on the bottom.

    D152177F-9E4A-4AAA-9637-FC8BF39BF5E8.jpg
A closer look shows the 3.4l dipstick is definitely not the right dipstick. Interestingly enough (at least to me), the markings on the 03-04 4wd dipstick is in the same position as the prerunner dipstick when measuring from the top.

I should note that my prerunner pan on the left looks to be the same size as the 4wd pan on the right, which in retrospect makes a lot of sense as to why the top two dipsticks are almost exact in length.

So, although toyota discontinued the correct dipstick that I need, it’s safe to assume that the 03-04 2.7l 4wd dipstick will work, and reusing the 2wd dipstick (assuming the pans are similar in size) is a safe option as well.

But huge thanks to everyone that tried to help!
