2nd gen w/2" lift - rear shocks

My truck has original rear shocks at over 300k miles. Left one is now leaking oil. This is the first lifted truck I've owned, so a novice at shock considerations with a lift.
There's a 2" block at the rear leaf springs, and the springs were replaced in the recall a few years ago.
Looking for shock absorber recommendations. I picked up a set of the yellow and blue OEM ones cheap (slightly used), but was not sure if they are worth putting on due to the lift. I drive mainly on pavement.

All depends on your budget.
Keep in mind the shocks you picked up, are made for a stock height. So that means if the truck is stock height, the shock can collapse 3” and then expand 3”….not sure if it is 3” either way but just using it as a example. Now that you are lifted, the shock can go down 5” but up only 1”

so people usally upgrade to a shock that is made for a lifted Tacoma. Popular option is the bilstein 5110.

 

Thanks, should that model be 5100? I've looked into those, may go that route. I'm not a big fan of the yellow shock look (prefer black, blends with the rest of the suspension).

bilstein 5100. Great shocks. And they are silver. Agree that the yellow doesn’t look that good.

 

Cool, thanks fellas. Bear with me, I'm old and not used to lifted trucks. Although I did have a new 88 Ranger STX years ago that had 'high rider' package, which was a mild suspension lift.
I do appreciate the advice, will order the 5100's.

Pretty sure the 5100 rears are designed for stock heights same as the stock blue and yellow Bilsteins.

 

I believe the 5100 rears are noted 0-1” lift.

would not waste time and money bothering with things like AAL/progressive AAL, 5100, etc
5160 is not much more than 5100

 

Fox 2.0 has a version for 2-3 " lift. Available at Accutune. FOX-985-26-117-TACO

 

with a 2inch block lift you will want to go with a proper length shock so you actually have some droop. With the b110 5100s you gotta watch out for over extension of brake lines as they are quite long shocks (4.25ish in longer than stock). With the 2 in block you wouldnt have to worry about collapsed lengths.

You can do the 5125's -

and not worry as much about brake lines (its what I run on my truck and only had to bend up the bracket on the axle to point them more upwards with the stock lines).

OR

You could get shock shaft extensions for the stock shocks which would make up for the block height.

 

I bought the

$91 24-186728 5100 Series Shock Absorber

24-186728, which I believe is the B8 5100. Will these be too long when extended, enough to compromise the brake lines? I am not sure what the extended length of the originals are.
I don't go off road.

 

that part number is a stock length shock part number. You wont have much if any droop with your setup and those shocks, and due to the blocks wont have full use of the shock itself. You could pair that shock with some shock shaft extensions

 

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought much about it as I am used to non lifted vehicles but what you said makes sense.
I'm hoping I'll be ok with the B8 5100's since I don't really go off road, and the lift has been on the truck several years with stock shocks. Don't want to do too much other than replace the bad shock, but from what I've read, the 5100 is dramatically better than the OEM shock.
My first thought was to swap the one leaky shock with a good identical one, but I figured at 300k they both should be replaced. Bushings are dried out also.
From my experience, shocks last a very long time (but I drive conservatively).

Any chance they can switch them out for the correct length shocks? They do make one for lifts up to 2.5 inches. Hopefully customer service can help you out.
