Positive Battery Terminal Repair

    Hi All!

    My positive battery terminal has completely corroded, fallen apart, and died. In looking online, I see a lot of mixed messages on how to best address the issue. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to replace the terminal without replacing the entire battery harness?

    You can install a new end. That assumes that you still have cable that can be cleaned up enough to attach it to and have enough length to fit the battery properly. You'll know pretty quick when you take it apart.

    Pure stock
    Called a marine clip. Cut off the old end, strip the sheathing about 1/2 inch. Soak it in baking soda. Rinse and dry. Apply a generous amount of dielectric grease. Clamp on marine clip and you’re good to go.

    For the replacement terminals, there’s multiple choices, most are good, some suck. The ones that use two little bolts and a metal bar to squeeze the cable, those suck.

    Here’s the terminal…I did have to cut it off from the battery cable because the corrosion was so bad.

    Yikes. Might have to whack the cable off farther down the line. Then you're stuck trying to pull the cable up close to the battery and use a shitty universal clamp terminal like washeem mentioned. There's universal positive cable assemblies available at OReilly that come with 6-8 inches of cable.. but the terminal clamps that come with those are always pretty dinky

    If you can separate the cable from the terminal where the bolt is and clean it up good, a proper toyota style clamp might work

    If you like the truck and want to take care of it, consider putting some money into an entire OEM cable assembly. It'll fit perfectly and last as long as the original one

    Also maybe invest in some battery terminal washers. I live on the West Coast USA and I have had no signs of corrosion for 5 years. I used to have to clean the terminals a few times a year.

    Time for a cable upgrade. Cables will have corrosion inside them that you can't clean off.

    Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    If your terminals were that bad I would replace the cables as well.

    I use Marine Terminals on everything I have been making Battery cables for a very long time.

    I tend to add things like that to my McMaster- Carr orders they were less then $5.00 each.

    The cheap way is a $3 universal terminal. A better way is using a butt connector, but you need a crimper and heat shrink tubing. If you are in San Diego area, I can do this for you. When I added my second battery, I went overboard and ended up with lots of extra wiring, butt plugs, cable ends, shrink tubing, and terminals. Bring craft beer, and we’ll call it even.

    While I like the concept of a quick release, I don't like how the starter wire connects to the terminal - same as the cheap universal terminal above. And no terminal cover?

    I had the same exact thing happened to mine... the worker at Orielly's said this happens a lot to Toyota's battery terminals. It's so hard to remove when it's corroded, and the only way to remove them is to basically cut them.

    Also, make sure to use CRC battery cleaner to clean the terminal post and the wires... the battery cleaner has a color indicator... so if you spray it on, and it turns pink, then there is battery corrosion on it. This just makes it easier to clean.

    But yeah, if you strip off the wire insulator, you will see that the corrosion is eating up the wire as well. This happened to both of my negative and positive wires and battery terminals.
