I have a 97 taco with the 2.7L. I got a really bad exhaust leak, and within a day or two of it getting worse, my throttle would stop responding for the first 1/4 in. and then plays catch up and gives you an annoying ass jerk. Of course it throws a code for this. I changed the tps and plugged the exhaust leak, but will still happen. Of anything it’s worse now than it ever has been. Seams to go away after driving for 20 or so minutes. Is there anyone that has had a similar problem and have fix outside of changing the sensor.

are you sure it's the sensor? I'd check the physical throttle cable. With the truck off, have a friend push the gas pedal while you look at the throttle body and see how long it takes for the slack to come out of the cable.

Also, these trucks (1st gen trucks) are sensitive to the brand of sensor you use. If you got a parts store sensor, it might be adding to your issue.

Well this is where a scan tool with graphing abilities or an oscilloscope comes in handy. What is your default TPS setting on scan tool live data?

I figured it out. I’m changing the TPS, I discovered that someone had spliced in a bit of wires to extend the wires to the TPS. Only thing is, their splice involved twisting the wires and electrical tape!
