I can spend some time with ya on the 13th or 14th looking it over. As others have said, if you can get a dealership to do a free inspection of the truck to come up with a list of items they would repair it would be ideal.

Has the timing belt been done? Any records of any repairs?

If truck had been kept up, it would of been worth 6K or 7K....
By the time everything is brought up to highway worthy, if he pays someone to do most, that'll be about right. Only better deal is get it from a dead relative....

If he does simple wrenching here and there, what he can do, he will learn of new things needing care/replacement...
    Its always something.......

5 luggers are super simple, he can figure most out thru you-tube........
and auto chain stores almost carry every part....
I've bought taco bumpers, grilles, head/tail lites, headers, radiators, all relatively cheap online.....at least compared to stealership.......tons of after market stuff..

There are some super critical systems I'd check first......like whole drive line, lower ball joints, tie rods.....

Coolant change, oil change, differential oil change, will tell u a lot about the condition of the internals.......how well maintained.....
And I pray your transmission fluid is still clear ruby red.....

Nessal -Ray Charles common bro what do you get out of disrespecting someone who came here for help to ask people that know about these trucks more than myself. I said I know cars I’m not a mechanic I’m not an expert I’ve had a wide variety of cars over the years mostly older and have dealt with many problems. I’ve installed brakes water pumps alternators ext but no I can’t rebuild engines or do the steering column.I made a mistake misdiagnosing my car because I didn’t know the specific weak points on this vehicle and I said multiple times that was my bad . Why beat a dead horse how does that help anyone. Comments like that make newcomers not feel comfortable to ask questions may seem obvious to some . This site is for people that like the same trucks to help each other. Maybe you were birthed in the back of a tacoma and know it front to back but some folks here are trying to ask for help and down talking doesn’t do that .

Yeah I have a pretty sharp togue when I see stupid things,
and here, we see a lot of stupid things......

We get a lot of cry babies here........these trucks are not a carefree lease situation, they're not self ass wiping....

All kinds 3 inch body lift/2 1/2 suspension lift. 31/11 1/2/15 tires All work done by myself for years. The only work performed by mechanic was fuel pumps. I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
You have to remember all the other stuff will last forever water pump/alt/starter compared to american made junk.

Yeah I've got a full box......of that stuff that's suppose to last forever....
...kept it all, but the core returns.....
I really like the denso radiators that fail about the 6yr mark....and its always at the crimp......
