Question - has anyone attempted to place a line-level and amp module behind the dash, and utilize all the wiring to the speakers using existing connectors detached from the back of the OEM head unit?

Is it possible for me to acquire connectors and pig-tails such that I can keep the existing head-unit, but instead of "tonpping into" existing wiring, I create or buy some custom plug-pigtails?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? There are “add-an-amp” kits available, but most are for subs. I’m sure enough research would yield a 4-channel harness, or even 5.

If that’s not what you mean, there’s www.autoharnesshouse.com . Drop a line to the owner explaining what you’re looking for, he may have it, or can build it for you.

I often ask this of myself. :)
I think first step may be to improve the quality of the speakers.
Then possibly add a little power with an amp, but behind the dash if possible. Not sure what I would need to accomplish that.
While vehicle in warranty, no desire to replace the head unit. Probably a speaker upgrade will be sufficient.

So the url provided isn't valid. Typo? If I were to place a small 4 channel amp behind the dash, i think I'd want to gen up my own cables between the HU and amp, then amp to speaker harness(es). Perhaps this is never done, I don't know.

I know the HU isn't spectacular as an audio source, but then neither is Sirrus, nor BT, nor some of the stuff served up by AA or Apple Car Play.

I just did that. Kicker key 200.4 behind dash, Custom made a pigtail according to this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tpp4s-no-nonsense-guide-to-kicker-key-t-harness-16-19.642415/

There might be a link buried in this thread for making a 2020+ harness. they are different. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/kicker-key-in-a-2020-with-8-entune.641008/#post-22145143

Made the whole thing plug and play. Caveat emptor, there is a lot of debate on the quality of Kicker equipment. They are an improvement over stock, and that's as far as I'll go on that. :cookiemonster:

@Rock Lobster Yes! That's what I was thinking. Didn't want to tap into anything. Just use existing wiring and connectors.

Do you know how much the 8" HU delivers in power to each channel?
I'm thinking however first step would be tweeters with cross over and 4 speakers for the doors.

Don't know my options. Better speakers May be enough improvement.

That I don't know. If I had to guess it would be somewhere between 20-30W per channel @ 4 Ohms. Better speakers would definitely be your first and best bang for buck improvement. I know its been said multiple times on other threads, but I have to echo the sentiment of surprise that the OEM speakers put out the sound that they do. Their magnets are bout the size of a nickel, driving a thin paper cone. Going with even a cheap speaker will be a vast improvement.

Yeah, sorry. Shouldn’t eat an type. https://www.autoharnesshouse.com/

As for power, most factory H/Us are around the 5wpc mark, almost all aftermarket H/Us say 50wpc but are actually 10-15wpc. A micro amp, like the Kicker Key, Alpine KTA series, JL MX etc., www.crutchfield.com has a bunch of them under “mini amps”. To make those work, you need some electrical skills, and make your own harness with a couple kits from Metra. Speaker adapters that work with the factory wiring come included when you buy speakers from Crutchfield, or you can source your own. What you want can be done, with a little sweat-equity from you.

Sweet. So is there a list of items that you used for your Franken-Radio harness?
And did you create some kind of wiring or top-level diagram? Thanks!

It’s all custom because it depends on the project. Most parts are sourced from Amazon.

I added a Joying Android HU. Kept the OEM wire to the speakers and backup camera. Needed to convert 12v to 6v to keep (power) the OEM backup camera. Joying was explicit that they don’t support this OEM backup camera. Added a front camera, w/switch using Joying video input.

    New front camera.

    OEM backup camera

For the 12VDC to 6VDC conversion, did you use a resistor-divider, or a buck/boost converter? :duel:

See my build page. One of the last entries. Fairly complete HU install documentation. I don’t know how much applies to a 3rd gen.
