Another 2017 with P11EE code

Did the tech say if there is anything toyota has done to the production of these trucks to stop this from happening? Or is it just a wait and see thing and if it happens the repair procedure is in place? Probably just wishful thinking but by buying a taco late into the 3rd generation I had hoped toyota would have the kinks worked out by now. Thanks for sharing and documenting your experience here. 2020 Texas made truck. 16K miles. Never off roaded, never towed.
#2 and #6 cyl. valve failure. Oil changed at 7K and 14K miles.

How ever they ate dealing with it in factory, it seems in 2020 they got a handle on it. It's thought the 2020 engines may have been 2019 runs, serial numbers should tell this.
@TRD-ED Can you confirm with yours?

It seems those that don't find this significant are outside of the issue's range.. I am very happy to have heard that Toyota not only knows, yet has put together a complete procedure for this issue. I recommend that anyone outside of warranty should at least approach Toyota about the repairs and see what they will do. Being it's a known issue..

I did a search a while back on p11ee and p11ec codes. Every single one needed head work. I didn’t make it through the older ones though.

Its a problem on the 2GR engine, and from what I have seen in the dealership, it is always bank 1. We were instructed by TAS to replace the head and valves. I have done 6-7 Tacomas and 3-4 Highlanders. Seemed to be on 17-19 and right about 58K miles on each of them. I have yet to see this on 16, 20 or 21's. And those numbers are small compared to the number of Tacomas and Highlanders we see on a daily basis for service. Have do fear, your truck will be as good as new when returned to you.

Some times it makes more sense to fix a problem IF it happens. Than to fix a problem before it happens. Financially speaking.

I’m betting the new trucks are “fixed”.
The older ones will be fixed IF they have a problem before the warranty expires.

It all comes down to profit in the end.

 

That's how I return them to customers, Like I've never been in there. Have actually been accused of not doing the work before, because I put everything back in the same location. To the point of matching the marks the hose clamps leave in the hoses. Good to see other tech's take as much pride in their work.

 

This is nice to hear as I’m extremely skeptical about really anyone else touching my vehicles. I don’t want to sidetrack this thread too much but how bad is the P11EC/EE repair? Is it basically just a new cylinder head (I’m assuming loaded with new valves all already assembled) with the associated head gasket, fluids, etc? I know being a DOHC with the large front timing chain and secondary chains and being an interference engine all add to the stress, but I’m curious if it’s reasonably accomplished in a home mechanic’s garage/driveway.

The frontiers had timing chain issues and head gasket issues that basically require the same amount of teardown. It’s a semi stressful job but manageable if you’re decent. Toyota seems to want anywhere from 3-7k for the job so if the worst happens and I deal with this out of warranty in a few years, I’m curious if I could just buy the parts and tackle it myself. I don’t really see why I couldn’t, especially if I bought some temp access to TIS.

 

Truck was there about 12 days total. Loaner car was given with no hassle.
Truck had also been detailed inside and out. All free of charge. Nothing but praises for this dealership!

You are probably the one to address this to.. you have seen, know and fix them.

BLtheP asks if it's just the head, I see it's more and includes the valves with some going a bit deeper. I figure due to how they re driven after the code shows up.

To another that asked if it's fixed in the newer versions? No sure it's a fix or just a bad run of valves and a few got though.. Am curious if theirs a new supplier or suppliers tooling was looked at. Curiosity only.

And of course root cause. You see it as valves I believe and I do see it as that also. Meaning, not much anyone of us can do to prevent it.

For myself I'll ask if you've seen Toyota step up on vehicles outside of warranty?

Your attitude about this and your professionalism is commendable! The mechanic working on my truck sounds just like you and so happy to have had the opportunity to speak with him. I feel so much better after doing so.

It what time frame did you see those failures? Were those 12 failures in 1 year, 2 years, etc?

 

You could do some digging into part numbers, see if any were updated around 2020. But with the very small percentage of engines this is happening to, it could be as simple as there arent enough 2020+ models to have had an issue and been reported on here yet.

Also a friendly tip, this place is incredibly helpful, but yelling at people to stay on topic never works. It usually just makes things worse on a Friday haha

 

@Olddawg - you mentioned earlier in the thread that you would look upon your vehicle having any recalls (when the fuel pump recall was brought into question).
Did you ever search yours?

edit: I forget which thread already - but another thing to note that someone did mention was tuned vs untuned trucks. May or may not be a factor, but so far the 3.5s that failed were untuned

 

The parts replaced were always the Head, valves, and all related gaskets and fluids. I would also replace the valve springs. I think it was a valve seat issue. But I never really took the time to try and figure it out. It wasn't anything that jumped right out at me as being the failure. Toyota probably did a running production change. Could have been any of several issues, from head not machined properly, bad seat, ect.

edit: I had not seen any that were out of warranty. Toyota is pretty good about stepping up to help good customers. And by good customers, I mean those who come in every 5k for maint. And not just for the free stuff, but the scheduled maint. And that they have spent money at the dealer. If you were one to just come in for your free 5-25K and free state inspections, they would not help those people.

 

They were all in about a 10 month period, I haven't seen one in close to a year now.

 

Did Toyota make you guys send any of the old parts back to them?

 

My guy, there have been about 1.5 million 3rd gens sold in the US. If the "problem" were approaching anywhere close to even 1% we would all know. This is what @hiPSI is trying to get across.

With any manufacturing process there will be failures. Even at 6 sigma, the ultimate manufacturing standard developed by Toyota, you allow for 7 failures per million opportunities.
