Those steps are using a location that was not designed to withstand that weight. They often cause the metal to start tearing.

Thank you. I've always been wondering about those. I guess i'll stick with the step ladder.

Yup one of those. No issues with metal damage? I'm 225lbs so i'm a bit hesitant on using one there. Trying to gain some insight on how people reach the center of the roof.

    thanks!

I had one of these for my 3rd Gen 4runner. I’m pretty light (135lb) and it dented the metal in the door jam immediately. Wouldn’t recommend.

My 210lb ass does zero damage to the door when I use it.

I’m using mine on an access cab FWIW

I have running boards. I use those to stand on to access the roof.
Or stand in the bed. But I have an access cab, so can pretty reach the whole top if and reach out far.
I can get all but the very front portion, that when I switch to the running boards.

    Sliders.

Depending on the design, the door latch may not get damaged, but may shift out of position. Then your door won't close properly, won't sit flush, etc.

Personally I've done enough trails with off-camber sections, that I'd never put a rack on the roof or any cargo so high up. For buffing out scratches and tree-branch pinstripes on the roof, I use a contractor platform about the same height as my sliders.

I have the factory tube steps.
    but i have t-rex arms
and i'm short (coupled with my height, i've been described as resembling a "rubic's cube"), even stepping into the cab, i can't really reach certain parts of the roof.

Open the door, step on the floor? Seems like the easy, no cost, no risk approach to me…

The door latch is designed to take a tremendous amount of pressure for safety reasons. That being said, the way those things are designed, it looks like the part that hooks to the latch wouldn't be a problem, since it can likely take the pulling force, but the part that rests against the pillar below the latch may press on a section that is not designed to take the inward pressure.
