Learning fishing knots.

just to add. i bought a tube of that line glue the fly fisherpeople use. i glue my knots for added security.

my FG game is strong now, but i still love the Alberto. the Alberto is fatter but shorter. FG longer but thinner. (<---there is a penis joke in there somewhere)

 

This is just me, but if I’m using a join knot it’s because I want to be able to wind that knot through the guides. Otherwise I can just use a barrel swivel. There are swivels made to pass through guides but really only on the largest rods.

Anyway, the Alberto is almost twice as fat as the FG. Also, if you tie an FG properly it’s the strongest knot (which kind of blows my mind). So I don’t choose an Alberto because the FG is much less likely to get hung up on the retrieve. I also think the FG is easier to tie on the boat, I’ve found a quick way to do it.

And who knew a knot conversation could give birth to dick jokes! TW really does harness the full creative energy of its members. So to speak.

Fluoro or mono to braid is a uni to uni for up to 40lb mono/fluoro. Above that I use an FG

 

It is good to learn new knots. You also can add bigger guides? It just makes the rods heavier.

I have a casting rod (one of a kind) with Aflco roller guides and a Aftco tip (large ring) for casting. Ulua fishing rod. 60-80lb class , shoreline fishing. We toss 9 oz sinkers with wire for anchors.

that San Diego reminds me of a clinch knot. Which I have been using for over 40 years….so similar.

 

Definitely similar but stronger. You can also double up the line and tie the same knot to max it out.

 

Use the Albright. Better knot anyway.

 

For small pound test I much prefer uni to uni, much easier to tie than the Albright, much slimmer, never had one break. To me the Albright is a purely high pound test offshore fishing knot. Besides, for that purpose I prefer the FG.

 

For heavy fishing lines, Ulua style of fishing in Hawaii, 80 lb main line to leader line 200 lb mono. It is common to use the Albright knot with the Bimini twist knots. Create for joining two different line sizes. Casting from shoreline.

I gotta laugh at that, most of only use a handful of knots fishing. Yes I do not know all the names either.
As long as it works for us, the name is not important.

I do enjoy reading and learning new knots for fishing. But the main goal “it works” and simple to use.
The Albright knot and Bimini twist is not a easy knot for beginners, once you master it. You will never use anything else. Over 40 years using this theses knots. Knotting to it!

 

I used to use the bimini to albright all the time for connecting spectra to mono/fluoro. I switched over to the uni to uni for the lighter stuff (this knot works way better than I realized. Had a 130lb bluefin on for 4.5hrs on 30lb test and it held) and make my own windons now for the heavy stuff. Loop to loop connections are superior and cast better through the guides for my applications.

 

Thank you for the Uni to Uni knots. Hawaii shoreline fishing species have a wide range of fishing lines and gears. I do use lines from 6lb to 80lb mainlines.
This is a great knot to know and use. Not only for joining two lines ,but for tying hooks , lures, swivels.
So close to the clinch knots.
I read that the clinch knot is NOT recommended if tying to any “braided lines”. Be aware.

Good to know,. I just switch over to braided lines in my lite spinning reels. Cast farther ,can carry a heavier line weight. I also use those spray to keep the lines tangle free.. Thank you

 

Pretty old thread but fitting for my questions...

New to the fly fish world. My rod reel combo I just received doesn't have a factory loop at the end of the fly line. I ordered new leaders which come with the loop.

• Can I do a Perfection Loop on my fly line? Or is there a better loop knot to make here ?
• With a permanent loop on the fly line, I would then use a loop to loop knot for quickly changing out leaders in different situations. Would this be acceptable ?

This trilene knot is simple and effective for freshwater Midwest fishing.
Typically will snap your line or bend the hook before breaking the knot.

 

If you are bound and determined to use the loop to loop connection for a leader then tie one on with a nail knot. When it's time to use another leader just leave the old leader on, clip the butt about 6" long and tie a perfection loop in it. There are a multiple leader to fly line connection gimmicks out there, the little metal eyes with barbs on the shank, the plastic footballs that you slide on and tie overhand knots, the welded loops etc. etc. None of them work better than the old nail knot and most all of them hang up in the tip top line guide. I used loop to loop for some years and got tired of them hinging and hanging in the rod tip, went to nail knots exclusively. Takes a couple minutes to tie and no issue to do it streamside. Good luck with whatever you choose.

And for bass fighing with hard tackle I use palomar knots mostly. Fly fishing for trout I use pitzen knots and double pitzen to tie tippet on.
