New reel, how to spool without twist

Hello all, getting back into fishing after a long hiatus and feel like a noob again.

Whats everyone do to prevent line twist on a spinning reel when spooling?
Ive read countless articles and all have their own method, but the one that sticks out is match the spool direction to the line direction coming off, while lying the line flat on ground.
Tried that last night with lots of twisting. It could be that i used old line from 3 years ago as a trial, maybe lots of memory.
The funny thing is my Shimano manual says to place the line spool on a pencil and wind while its coming out from under the spool. That basically goes against what every else says.
I am putting 8lb mono on.

The method I was taught was to get a half dozen or so wraps on spool then with the line spool sitting upright on the ground, lower your rod tip toward the spool. If it twists up when the line goes slack, its wrong. flip the spool over and wind it on that way. I run my line through a heavy phonebook (remember them?) to provide tension. Now if I’m using braid, I’ll take it to the tackle shop and let them do it. Braid needs to be wrapped tight and laid right or you will have problems.

put a screwdriver or whatever in the spool.

clamp the screwdriver horizontaly to a bench, table, whatever. so that the spool is vertical

run the line through the rod eyes as normal, onto the reel

use your fingers of one hand to hold the line near the lowest eye, for tension so you don't reel too fast.

put the rod tip right on top of the spool and reel.

the line twists because it's unraveling from a flat/horizontal spool.


you could also put the new spool of line in a bucket of water. if you get it just right, the spool will upright itself as you reel it in


works for braid, nylon and floro

 

I agree with Sudsman44, for braid have a shop do it. For mono I've been using a spinning reel adapter from South Chatham Tackle. You don't need their fancy winder. Just chuck the adapter in a drill. Then hold the bulk line spool on a pencil, screwdriver, or whatever will fit, and apply tension to the bulk spool as you wind line. This way the line is tight on the reel spool.
This seems to have gotten rid of the pre twisted line for me as the line goes straight from one spool to the other.

I have no affiliation. Just a tool I found that works for me.

 

I made a piece of small, threaded rod to put in my drill chuck to directly load the line onto the spool. More importantly, I soak it in warm water for about an hour after. I've never had an issue doing it this way.

 

I used to reel it up on a reel however and have someone hold it it. I’d then tie it to my spool after going through the eyes and have them set there drag all the way up. I’d begin reeling the line on from there’s to mine which were technically both mine . This provided constant tension and spooled it quite nicely and efficiently
