Noticed this dangling when I looked under the truck from the driver side today:

Crawled under to take a look and it turns out that was just the sheath for this cable that is now broken:

Any idea what this is? Nothing obviously wrong with the truck, no warning lights, etc.

Looks more like wire loom vs a cable casing. Based on location I'd guess an O2 sensor for the driver bank right by that cat, but that would probably pop a CEL.
Is one end of the wire attached to an O2 sensor threaded into the exhaust nearby? Did you happen to trace the wires at all?

Might be a wire somebody added on to get power back to the bed. Any extra wires at the pos battery terminal?

First picture looks like loom to protect an electrical wire. Second picture looks like a mechanical cable but it's hard to tell, can't see it very well.

Look under, see where the two ends go. It's easiest if the exhaust pipes aren't hot, so if you brush your hand against it you won't get burned.

I crawled under my truck. The only 2 cables I see with that type metal sheathing on it are for the transmission cable. And the PASSENGER side E-Brake cable.

The hanging down cable is not metal sheath, just standard plastic loom.

Well, I don’t recall seeing anything that looked like that under there. It’s dark or I’d go look again.

I figured it can’t hurt to look and possibly help a guy out.
I was in the same situation once with a throttle cable on my saw. And not one person even responded. And all I needed was a simple picture.

    I finally figured it out.:)

Op, first picture looks like a 4wd transfer case? Maybe it’s a cable that goes to it?

Thanks for the input guys. I wasn't able to get a closer look at it today but as near as I can figure it is either a wire going to the canopy or the trailer hitch. Canopy doesn't make sense as my third brake light works just fine. The truck is due for some maintenance so while it is in the shop I will just have them take a look and patch it. There's nothing obviously wrong or malfunctioning so I will keep driving it unless I notice anything amiss.

    All stock, baby!
@TnShooter I think your TC actuator vent line has some cracking starting at the connection. Could just be a little dirt making it look that way, hard to tell zoomed in, but figure you might want to take a look to see if it needs to be patched.

@thegrandpoohbah if its electrical Id probably want to wrap some electrical tape over both ends until you can confirm what exactly it is / get it repaired

Does your shell have a second light on a switch? The 3rd brake light is usually wired into the rear brake lights so the wires wouldn't go all the way up there but if someone wired the "dome" light to the battery so they could use it without the running lights being on, then it might take that path to the battery all the way down the frame.

Nahh, that’s from me greasing it every 5k. I don’t wipe the grease off that comes out of the joints after I grease it.
I figure, it can only help keep the rust away. :D

Or maybe I’m just too lazy to wipe it offf:anonymous:
