So years ago I replaced one of my tail lights on my 2013 TRD Sport with what I thought was the correct light. I bought a TYC replacement off of amazon. I was being cheap and didn't want to pay twice as much from the dealership. But it was supposed to be a directly OEM replacement, and honestly the quality is identical. Except for 1 thing...

I didn't notice until it came in but apparently the clear lens on the factory tail lights have a bit of a smoke to it. However the new one I got was perfectly clear. It's pretty obvious when you put the lights next to each other. Not as noticeable when the lights are installed and have the tailgate between them. But still different enough that it bugged me but I chose to just deal with it cause it's a PITA to get or return parts from where I live.

Fast forward to today and I see that yet again the same taillight is cracked and getting water inside. So this time I want to make sure I get the correct light and will buy right from Toyota.

The listed Toyota part number for the one I ordered previously was supposed to be ‎81560-04160. It may be possible that part number is correct and TYC just didn't use the smoked lens on theirs. I had tried calling my dealership at the time about it but couldn't get a straight answer out of anybody. I've heard they may have only been on the TRD models, and the other models use the non-smoked lens. I am finding a few different part numbers when searching online but of course none specify if they are clear or smoked lens.

Does anyone know the correct part number for the smoked lens version of the LED tail lights from Toyota? This is the LED tail lights with the clear lens (the housing inside is red chrome) that came on the 2012 - 2015 models. Maybe even on the 2011 as well.

So: I went to the Toyota parts website (parts.toyota.com) and put in the VIN for my truck. (2014 SR5). I searched and found the tail lamp for my truck. Then I went out and found a 2014 TRD Sport for sale out there that appeared to have darker-tinted tail lamps in the pics than mine. (which are definitely clear in the signal and back-up lamp sections.) I entered the VIN. Unfortunately the part numbers were the same: RH: 81551 / LH: 81561. I think you may need to go to a good dealer with your OEM original/stock tail-lamps and work with them to try figure it out. Are the headlights on your Sport dark tinted as well? The Sport trim trucks I looked at for sale out there (Carmax.com, Edmunds, etc) -mostly- appear have tinted lenses, but not all. Good luck! The fun is all in the pursuit! (at least for me)

Thanks! That is kinda what I suspected... Might just have to get my dealer to order one in and then bring the old one in to compare.

No my headlights are just normal clear lens and bright chrome. The dark tinted ones were only on the 2015 TRD Pro I think. Though you can buy the tinted ones and swap them, which some guys do.

It was apparent when looking at the various trucks listed with the TRD Sport trim that I found for sale out there, that some of them seemed to have tail lamps with a darker tint to them. I also narrowed it down to trucks that showed a hood scoop just in case the claimed trim package in the ad/listing was incorrect. The actual one I used the VIN for to search also had a TRD Sport decal on the rear fenders. If you go do a dealer, I would remove the tinted lamp housing from the truck and bring it in to show them. If the new one arrives and it is not tinted it should be returnable.
