If looking for a 4x4 Auto Transmission, will any A340F work?

Attempting to source a 4x4 Auto trans for my 98' Prerunner Tacoma. Looking at different listings online, they vary from vehicle to vehicle. Some are out of Sequoia's, some are out of 4Runners, etc. All of them are A340F transmissions, but would I be digging myself into a more complicated job if it's not pulled out of a Tacoma, or are they all the same?

To quickly answer your question, yeah if you want it to be as easy as possible then hunt for a tacoma transmission compatible with your year taco.

https://www.ebay.com/str/toyautomart - grabbed a front driveshaft from them, others here on TW have used them extensively. Definitely take a close look at their offerings.

https://www.wholesaleimportparts.com/ - ended up going this route for a complete rear driveshaft. Couldn't track down a salvaged/used one so just decided to go with new aftermarket. Others on the forum have used them and so far, nothing negative I've come across.

**NOTE** Be weary and definitely do your research on potential transfer case candidates (as well as transmissions). I've had one seller label a transfer case as from a specific VIN and it turned out to be completely incorrect. A lie? Have no way to prove it. Point being, do your homework. Use https://www.toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle/vehicle-specification to plug in the VIN and comfirm its what you're looking for. Check pictures carefully.

On the subject of transfer cases, you asked about years - I'd start with 99 and below. The transfer case I grabbed is supposedly out of a 95. Be sure to review the trasfer case identification thread (first link I listed above).

A word on parts...
Need to decide if you want to spend the extra money on OEM parts or save a bit and go with aftermarket. Some have gone with aftermarket hubs/wheel bearings and have had no issues. There have also been some reports of problems with aftermarket hubs and bearings. If you end up sourcing steering knuckles out of a salvage yard or from another source, you should be able to re-use the manual hubs. I would still replace the bearings (which or pay someone to do it for you) and I personally would go with OEM bearings/parts. Just my personal preference.

There will be setbacks but don't give up. I'm literally in the home stretch, working out a couple of issues with lower ball joint bolts (lol?) and last step will be swapping in the A340F trans and driveshaft.
