The 2022 Hilux, in Germany, can be had with a rear diff-lock, a manual, and a diesel, all at the same time!

I think it's dumb that Toyota does not provide us with the 2.8l D-4D as a power train option in the US and Canada. I understand that the engines (2gr and 1dg) are built in different plants, and as such it would more expensive to offer a diesel power-train. But, I also fully believe that a ton of Tacoma owners would be more than happy to pay the 6000+ dollars over base to make it happen.

I would be happy to just find a toyota diesel engine and transmission that would fit my 1980 pickup and still be able to pass smog regulations.

    Never gonna happen.

Diesel isnt a high demand item in the US to begin with, ever tightening emissions means manufacturers have to perform some serious engineering hoop-jumping to get compliance on NOx, SOx, and COx, and to cap it all off, VW's colossal fuckup ruined it all for everyone else.

Small engine diesel is going extinct. And I'll say this as a former diesel owner, good riddance. They arent as cool as everyone makes them out to be.

All this is sadly true. I'm a diesel lover, and currently drive a '92 Hilux LN107 with a 3L. Owning a diesel use to make sense in the old days when it was really cheap at the pump.

You usually pay more when purchasing any vehicle with a diesel engine, and maintenance is more expensive than gas.

You only benefit from owning a diesel if you put huge miles on your vehicle while towing/hauling heavy loads.

Despite all this, I still love a diesel pickup......... ;)
