HP Tuners for 2005-2015

2005-2015 Tacoma. So $600 gets you the hardware and software just to have the ability to make your own tune and load it to your truck, no base tune included.

VF Tuner is $399 for hardware and software, tune pack pricing varies, but is $125 for 4.0L base (non-supercharged) tunes. So $525 just to get access to your truck and start making your own tunes.

How much do you think tuners should be charging to load a developed and proven tune to your truck for you?

 

I already have an MPVI2 and universal credits for my truck, purchased years ago for well-under $600, as I recall. I also have a proven tune for my truck, provided by @JustDSM for a VERY reasonable cost. My request of Adam was for assistance in turning on auto-lock/unlock and adjusting the speedo for larger wheels, neither of which can be done via an HPTuner. It required multiple such requests over a period of more than three weeks to get a response. When he did, his primary interest was in tuning the truck for $550-$1000. He was less than confident in his ability to deliver on my requests, but agreed to "give it [his] best shot." Because of this, I haven't made time to schedule an appointment. As I said, YMMV.

 

Got it. My point was if someone wants to tune their 2GT today, and has to start from scratch, it's a $500+ cost of entry, just to get hardware, software and access. Then buying a tune or building a tune is additional time or $ on top of that. So someone loading a tune to a customer's truck for them, for $500-600 is similar cost, if not cheaper in many cases. SC tunes generally cost more as there is more time/log cycles and the tune packs are usually more expensive, which you likely know by working with JustDSM on yours.

As for your lock/unlock, you can likely do that yourself if you can get a Tactrix OBD2 device and use the TIS Techstream available here: ECU TSB Update | Tacoma World . Unfortunately the Tactrix will run about $200 and the HPT MPVI2 won't work with Techstream.

Speedometer cannot be adjusted via Techstream or HPT or VF, etc... it is controlled off of wheel sensors in the ABS computer. Only way to adjust to my knowledge is to buy a Hypertech or Rough Country in-line calibrator. Again, these silly calibrators are also around $200.

 

I'm aware of the cost of tuning hardware, software, and time. All of my vehicles have forced induction and I've run custom tunes for nearly a decade. None of that changes my assessment that Adam was slow to respond to my inquiries and the prices he quoted were high (for what I want).

Appreciate the Techstream info, but have to ask if you know whether the Techstream thread/info you referenced is pertinent to 2nd Gen

2005-2015 Tacomas. Specifically, will TechStream V14.20.019 work for 2nd Gen 2005-2015 Tacomas?

 

Not trying to defend Adam specifically. Just wanting to express the point that self tuning a Toyota truck is still a $500+ endeavor.

Yes, V14.20.019 is good up to 2020 Tacomas. I’ve used it for several 2nd Gens to apply TSB’s and alter other settings. You’ll just need a Tactrix or VF device to interface with TIS/Techstream. It is not recommended to use the cheap Tactrix knock-offs, but as long as you’re not trying to apply ECU updates or something critical the knock-offs may work ok.

@Norton I don’t believe there is an option for the auto-lock/unlock in Techstream.

 

I've wondered if it was possible for years. The 2010 DCSB my son bought several months ago has it, however, so I assumed it could be enabled.

It's odd that Toyota stripped functionality like that out of newer MY trucks. Then again, his interior door panels are nicer than mine too.

Sorry for being a bit slow, I probably mentioned it but am in my last year of grad school and working full time while tuning on the side. I have a friend helping here and there but he is out of the state right now. I did lower the price for the 2GT SC tune, but understand if it’s still to high for you. Justin and John are both very thorough and it does take a bit longer to dial than an NA truck, and as a result the prices are higher on all ends. Thank you for opening my eyes to this awesome awesome tech and putting me in touch with JustDSM. Very excited for trucky to get some of his time.

And very very very excited to just maybe (fingers, toes, everything crossed that nothing is substantially wrong aside from current fuel/ignition control — which I’m not freakin driving at all until resolved) finally have a truck running the way I hope it will with a S/C.

Hey, I’m on Maui as well, just got my MPVI3 and happy to help out (under the direction of @JustDSM) to save on costs for ya! You’ll still need to buy the licenses and hook JustDSM up as required for the actual tuning.

 

This is a great meta-point to make. It'd be terrible if one day TW forums went dark for whatever reason. Funding, lack of interest, a key person going AWOL, legal issues, regulatory issues, whatever.

Who owns / operates TW forums, and are they open to a 3rd party permanently archiving the site? How big is the site w/ all attached content & photos, etc?

 

@Norton. There is a Dakota Digital thread. They discuss in detail how to install and adjust to have the Speedo calibrated. Not sure if you've seen that?

The forum for rock solid toys had a really good write up at one time for the Dakota digital. It’s what I have in mine but no idea how it’s wired up. That was over 10 years ago tho.

 

Hi all, garage clean out time.
I have an ECU from my 2014 sport that is already tuned, all you need is to hit up @JustDSM to put your VIN on it and it is ready to go, or you can have him tweak the tune for your own specific preference.
This makes upgrading easy since you don’t have any downtime while you wait for him to program it, all you have to do is switch ECUs when you get it back.
