Oh I agree there's better out there. But to mix completely different whiskies is just.. I dunno, feels wrong. It's not like he was making 1915 or something.

I saw blantons at a bar on Monday, $27 a pour. Utter insanity.

Yep. I love a bottle of Blanton’s around $60-70 but if you’re looking for a pour at a bar it’s $20-30 if they even have it. I’d be bummed if I bought one for somebody and they just poured it into whatever brown water is sitting in front of them. Next time I met with that customer I’d talk up and buy them a Jim Beam Apple.

It was reasonable here. Ended up being $18 plus a $2 "Neat Fee" which I don't understand at all but wasn't worth asking about.

I guess it’s technically RyeDay and I’ve come to realize I’m Rye-deficient. Besides the Sazerac, this is the only Rye I have:

    Any good rye suggestions?

Yeah, the pour out is kinda a dick move no matter what whiskey if someone else is treating you.

I second the Michter’s single barrel rye. I also liked, thanks to this thread, the Sagamore double oaked and High West double rye.

    New high score

Clearly I jumped the gun on the Sazerac last night and didn't check back in for Jack off Thursdays. Fully prepared for fRYEday.

Also, based on what I've read since I only drink this one on special occasions it should be decanted into a smaller container, correct?

Can't hurt to decant that one, but IME you can push the higher proof bottles a bit further since there's so much alcohol vapor in the bottle's headspace.

My last bottle of Jack SBBP got down to about that level and then I just kept drinking out of it once or twice a week until it was killed. I really miss that one though, it was out of this world good.

Hey that actually brings up a good point. If you choose to decant these things you could always pop an once into a smaller sample bottle. Then one day years into the future, after you've gone through several of these SBBPs and saved an once from each one, you can have a mega Jacked Up flight to determine which batch was best.

I likely will have this juice for a couple more years so I'll source the smaller bottle to pour into

VERY good value for a whiskey that's good and BiB. I enjoy it straight up and in cocktails. Would buy again for sure.

That one got me started down the Rye path as well. There are a lot of good ryes out there from just about every major distillery. I have only come across one which wasn't quite my wheelhouse, a 2017 Russel's Reserve 6yr, which tasted of way too much eucalyptus for my taste, but go figure I absolutely love their bourbons.

The last few years I have come to appreciate more MGP sourced or branded ryes or rye blends (I think Bulleit Rye is MGP, right?).

You really can't go wrong with any choice given the competition driving up quality all around.

I use these 375mL bottles. A touch pricey, but good quality thick glass and importantly very good, tight cork seals:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01NAWVHGO?ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

Also makes it easy to measure - decant once your 750 is below half.

Same. It was my first rye experience as well, mainly because I was looking for as high a rye content as possible, and Bulleitt is 95%. I love the Whistlepig Piggyback since it's 100%

Correct, distilled by MGP for Diageo, who owns Bulleit.
