So I want my 2010 2trfe to last forever, currently have 72k miles and she runs like a top, I noticed you can buy a brand new short block from toyota for about 2800ish, is it worth it for one the day comes where the old gal might be too tired?

I'd find a crashed vehicle or even buy a complete engine from one of those JDM importers as its used alot in Japan and other countries and would be way less..most of the engines from Japan have low miles / KMs on them as they get taken off the road really early because of the yearly increasing cost of getting them tested to drive them each year.. in all likely hood you could find a complete low used engine and have it delivered for half the cost of a new short block..

Id say the rest of the truck falls apart before anything goes wrong with a 2tr short block. Just keep up with your maintenance and it will sneer at the years with contempt.

If you expect your Toyota 4 cylinder to last forever, just be sure to run synthetic oil, changing earlier than later.

At your current rate of accruing miles, you've got about 38 years before you hit 300k. You might have other problems by then.

Maybe I'm being Captain Obvious maybe not but the 2TR-FE is in fact a cast iron block that could be bored over and rebuilt unlike the majority of the other disposable single use aluminum blocks Toyota makes..I've heard 300k to 500k on the factory engine is fairly common with original owners aka reasonable care taken and no abusive treatment etc..there's even talk of 700k and possibly not 100% sure but the 1.5 million mile Tacoma that needed a head gasket replaced at 880k miles may in fact be a 2TR-FE engine..sure unicorns perhaps but by the sound of below average mileage use, it may last until gasoline vehicles are banned outright and only in museums or all the gaskets / rubber products turn to dust..

    Not to me.
Who’s to say that when you buy the new engine you don’t total the truck the next day?

I find it better to buy that kind of stuff if/when the time comes.

Are many or most modern engine blocks aluminum? I'm fine with old school cast iron if that's a factor in why the 2TR-FE is one of the more reliable, longest lasting 4 cylinder engines out there.

Would have loved to have a brand new short block or better yet a low mileage JDM from when the 22REs were still available. In hind sight, I would have picked up a couple to shrink wrap and have on the shelf.

You'll be dead before your block or valve train is worn out. Delivery couriers report their 2TR's are not only still running well at 800,000 miles, they still aren't burning much oil. One spare part to keep on hand is a cylinder head gasket as they sometimes start leaking after 20-30 years or 500,000 - 1,000,000 miles.

Not a bad replacement interval considering the Subaru EJ25 engine would typically need new head gaskets around 130k miles. And that's plural because it's a flat 4. Also being a flat 4, it's better (or maybe necessary) to remove the engine for the job. I'd think removing the 2TR engine wouldn't be necessary.

Im planning on ordering from this company. Before i do, im going to call them and see if they have anything they can show me for the parts, if they're oem or cheap junk etc.

I was planning on rebuilding my block, but I don't have the time, and i cant have my truck out of service for as long as the machine shops will have the block

That's a junk aftermarket part filled LONG block engine (fully assembled cylinder block, cylinder head and valvevtrain). Genuine Toyota replacement engines are 2-3 times more expensive and not even offered as a long block. The cylinder block, cylinder head and valvevtrain must be purchased separately and assembled by the buyer or his/her service shop.
