Maximum velocity is basically as it’s leaving your barrel. Being that it was so close and the bullet is going as fast as it’s going to go. It probably pancaked on Impact. I’ve seen this happen with bullets that aren’t bonded and have a thin jacket like ballistic tips at close range before.

Velocity is its greatest at the muzzle and starts dropping from there, but at 30-40 feet like you say, that's minuscule. Its hard to say what happened IMO. You hit the shoulder, probably enough bone to stop the slug enough to prevent a pass through.

Today was Pa's Sunday hunt in rifle season and of course it was a washout. Son and I both got flatheads yesterday. Nursing my lungs today...asthma sucks.

First trip with new truck and dropped this 130 LB Doe at 22 yds yesterday in NH to fill my archery tag. Couldn't get up my mountain road in Maine to get to my property Friday so I drove NB then West over the border to Pittsburg, NH. Worth the trip. Enjoy the day

Bw s256 turbo with 3 in glass pack dumped pre axle raptor liner bed and top rails and fenderflares and rocker panels. Hunter side steps. Plasti-dipped upper fenders and emblems. satin black spray paint here and there inside and out. 5100's set to 1.75" up front . C channel front bumper. Maxxis bighorn 255/85/16
Expanding bullets are directly related to velocity, higher velocity=greater expansion. The greater the expansion, the less penetration your get. Like a dragster throwing a parachute only in reverse. You can see this with the exact same bullets loaded in 38 special vs .357 mag, often the 38 will penetrate just as far or farther than the .357 because it isn't going fast enough to mushroom so it acts more like an fmj. With a ballistic tip, you accelerate expansion even more, so very close shots will sometimes not be a pass through because you get, sometimes, 2.5x original caliber expansion

I just had this happen last weekend with that doe. I hunt some large agricultural fields with shots commonly at or over 400 yards. So we generally hunt with some larger, flat shooting, magnum calibers. I shot that doe at right about 50 yards with a 300 win mag. Large entrance hole, no exit hole. Definitely overkill for the shot but it was not the typical shot for the property.
