I'm in need of a CV Axle for my daughters 16' I tried ordering an oem reman but they canceled my order re no stock & no backorder.

So other than buying a new oem axle are there any other oem quality options out there for a reasonable price?
    TIA!

Extreme Terrain has decent ones. I would call East Coast Gear Supply and see if they have one they’d sell ya.

Not tacoma specific, but I've had luck with brand new Napa cv axles for my other cars.

I just put axles from CVJ axles out of Denver on my 16. They’re remanufactured Toyota parts and have the option to have extensions if you’re lifted. They do require a core deposit that you’ll get back if you send your original cvs back within a month.

    Thanks for the replies guys:

Extreme Terrain has them new $150/ea or $250/pr. They claim these are "heavy duty"

I've had others say good things about NAPA axles but have heard they are the same Cardone you can get from Rock Auto for ~$65

I have never heard of CVJRemans I'll check them out.

Toyota OEM new, "on sale" ~$335. This is crazy considering the Cardone is ~$65

There is a huge difference in quality between OEM and basic aftermarket Cardone axles though. OEM axles can better withstand steeper angles and more abuse in general than a basic aftermarket axle.

If all she does is commute with her truck, then aftermarket cheaper axles will likely be fine. Especially if the truck isn't lifted.

This conversation comes up often and I’ve never read a good reason not to run stock cv axles. Aftermarket parts are not necessarily better.

If you want something better than stock, you could check out the RCV cromoly cv axles.

Her truck is her daily driver never offroad, it is lifted 2" with 6112/5100's. The left side axle has a hole in the inner boot and occasionally I swear I can hear a click so I figured I'd just replace it. I'll reboot the current axle & keep it as a spare.

Check and make sure the boot fins on the CV axles aren't rubbing, if they are then no matter what it gets replaced with it will keep tearing. A 2" lift usually is safe as far as boot rubbing goes but you never know

Go OEM. Napa has been hit or miss for some.

Try to swing the OEM ones if it is affordable. It would suck to do the job and it grenades in 8,000 miles.

Be careful of cheap new CV axles....I know several importers in the business. They cut a lot of corners. I remember breaking one of my stock CV axles in my old '86 toyota on a trail before I did the SAS, and I had a spare new unit with me so I swapped it, and proceeded to break it in the next 100 feet going around a corner on what was effectively a dirt road. Upon disassembly, the outer spline (hidden by the boot) and the CV itself was about 1/2 the size of the OEM....the outer housing was mostly solid steel, with a joint more suited to a small FWD car, and the spline diameter was less than an inch in diameter, while the original was pretty huge. This was done to consolidate components....at the OEM level, there are hundreds of different size ball type CV joint assemblies. In the aftermarket, some manufacturers will pick a handful and use them on everything. In my experience, new chinese axles suck.

Toyota OE new axles don't suck. If you can find a local rebuilder, that's not a bad way to go. If you can't, I'd get a new unit from the dealer. By once cry once.

If you have a hole in the inner boot, change the boot. The inner joint doesn't typically click, it's the outer one that does that during turns...but unless you've got it in 4x4 while it's clicking, it ain't the axle clicking. I just bought a boot for the wifes 4runner for $12.

Daughter drives a 2016 Tacoma but she isn’t sourcing the axle? Have the money to waste on a lift kit but not replacement parts. Doesn’t add up.

PS. You’ll be fine with Napa. I’ve been running one hard offroad for a while now but recommend OEM.

I have several spares so for someone who has no plans of consistently breaking them, I would recommend OEM.

If you want to be cheap about it, Napa will get you by but its not as good as OEM. My Napa CV is also very rusted despite being both newer and in a very dry limited salt use state. While my original OEM on the otherside still looks factory.

Just be prepared to eventually replace the Napa CV in sooner intervals.
