It seems most of the sliders I see on 3rd gen Tacoma double cab short bed's are placed too close to the back tire compared to the gap between the front of them and the front tire. Is their a legitimate reason or all the fabricators just following what the others have done....? I'm a little OCD when it comes to things being equal or looking out of balance. For example if I'm at someone's home and there is a picture hanging crooked on the wall I have to force myself to not straighten it.

Function over form. Remember that they serve more purpose than just a high-center impact, they also deflect objects that have been kicked up by the front tires. Few objects kick up directly behind the front wheel, and it needs to be tapered away from the front fender to accommodate turning radius for most tire sizes. The slider can deflect objects away from the rear, especially long branches that can lodge up into the fenders and cause havoc, hence you want them mounted as rearward as possible.

    Stock-ish
You're right, most sliders do come up short and actually do not protect the whole length of the truck/are uneven. That in turn leaves room for things to get wedged in between the slider and the tire.
At the front, a slight taper to start is nice.
I really like my @WarFab Armor sliders, which run tire to tire with finger room to spare, where others leave several inches of gap, even with stock sized tires.

I even asked one of the fabricators if they would build a custom set slid further towards the front....The answer was no.
