Mech E here - used to work for Stoneridge Corp designing 4wd actuators, seat belt position sensors, trailer outlets and such. If only you guys knew the shit we were told to to do to "pass" QC or make criteria.. Minus the shitty up/downs with the auto economy it was one of my favorite jobs. I was told to design something then beat the shit out of it, shock it, burn it, salt fog it, etc to failure.

I was unfortunate enough to not work with it, but there was a flame chamber at my last job for another plant. They made fuel hoses for aerospace, so they'd put them (maybe with fuel?) into flame to test them.

Wife got rear ended this morning at ~45 mph, car is more than likely gonna get totalled out. Thankfully she's okay and home right now but car shopping is not something either of us were expecting to do, especially not now that she's currently student teaching and making pennies. Currently waiting to see what insurance says, hoping that it being a toyota in the current market will work in our favor to get her in something as soon as possible but we just won't know until we hear from them. Happy Thursday!

Yeah, she's a little shaken up but doing good. Very happy she didn't have to take a ride to the hospital. She likes the 4runner tho...

Glad to hear she is okay! Who knows, they might fix that Camry before they label it totaled (from that one picture, it doesn't look to bad, but...).

High winds up here last night dropped a tree limb on my wife's Subaru. Nobody was driving, happened in our driveway, but it still sucks. Rear hatch seems to have taken all the damage so hopefully the repairs aren't outrageous.

Thanks guys. She was saying the back was all mangled up and a bunch of stuff underneath like the muffler mount are toast. We'll see what ends up happening

:O was she stopped or moving? That's a hell of a hit. Thankfully 2 relatively modern toyotas means crumple zones really did their job. Glad she's all good! Cars are cars, people aren't!

:spy: looks like there's going to be an available cheap prius in the area. Does she like black?

and @BadDNA too. Damn. Bad luck for cars today.

Glad she's okay. Insurance should say, "Yeah, it's the other guy's fault, so here's a check and we'll sort it out with his insurance." The question is how much will they offer?

If nothing else, buy something to get her through until she gets a real job. Then sell the replacement and buy what she wants.

I just went through that a couple years ago, I fought tooth and nail with my own insurance company to get the number up as high as I could get it, then let them duke it out with the other insurance company. I got them to come up $3k over their initial offer through doing my own research, providing receipts for upgrades I made, finding comparables and correcting them on the features that my truck had on it. They fought me on the rental also, they put me in a little econo-box but I had a camping trip coming up and they wouldn't authorize giving me a vehicle that I could tow with. I ended up calling the other guy's insurance company and they agreed to reimburse me for upgrading to a truck. Even when it's the other guys fault, it's still a shit show going through the process.

I've never dealt with anyone but my own insurance company. Especially if it was my fault. Once we both had the same insurance company. Well sort of. I was driving a city vehicle and the city self insured. For some reason when the other driver reported the accident, my name popped up as their insured. When they called me, I explained that I was driving a city owned vehicle that was the end of my conversation.

Anyway, I figure I spend enough on insurance that my company can deal with the other company, especially when it's the other guy's fault.

When my Outback was totaled, they came back low. I asked for the comparables they used to determine the value and every one was a four cylinder. I told them they needed to compare against six cylinders. They told me there aren't enough of them out there to get a big enough pool to compare with.

It was an insane amount of arguing and giving them examples of nearly identical H4 vs H6 Outbacks to show the difference in asking prices. They eventually added around $1000 and I ran out of ambition to argue more, but it really should have been closer to $2000.

There's more on the ground, that's just a piece of it. I was looking up parts this afternoon, the hatch, glass and other broken parts are <$2k, so labor's where it's going to cost, but if we can get the shop & insurance company to replace with new OEM, not used or aftermarket parts I'll be ecstatic (it is a 7 year old car but it's pristine, doesn't even have 50k miles on it yet).
