White Rim Adventure with a Little Mud Thrown in for Good Measure

The following day was an early start. The plan was to run the Elephant Hill trail. We had a campsite reservation for the Horsehoof campsite in the park.

It was a beautiful morning. The storm had passed and we had clear blue skies.

Unfortunately, when we got to the park entrance, we found that the trail was closed because of the conditions after the snow storm. We were told it may open later that morning and we could talk with one of the rangers if we wanted. We wanted! So we hung out for a while. Made some 2nd breakfast and waited for the ranger to 'walk' the trail to see about opening up the gate for us.

 

Long story short, we were not allowed to run the Elephant Hill trail for the 2nd year in a row. We could have gone around and into the trail via Beef Basin, but in the end we decided not to. Instead we headed back to Moab to run the Hell's Revenge trails in Sand Flats and then find camp for our last night in the area.



At this point we decided to head out Onion Creek to a camp spot we knew of. This may have been another bad choice as the road was in pretty poor shape. I think I'll be finding red clay in all the hidden crevasses on my truck for quite some time.

 

It's only a matter of time my friend. Give it a little more time.

 

The ledge is unchanged. The BLM just made it impossible to get to.

I think you should consider adding some posts to this thread about your jaunt over to Delicate Arch.

I don’t know if you’ve done it the beef basin way, but I’d fully recommend it. Last time were there we did the opposite; elephant hill, Bobby’s hole (which I was so nervous about I didn’t sleep the night before), then out via beef basin. Tons of great scenery and a few old Indian ruins/places to check out.

 

Yeah, I've done the Beef Basin route back to the highway a few times. Also gone up to Bears Ears and over to Natural Bridges from there too. That whole area is amazing.
