I'm so glad we don't have to chain here, what a pita. If it gets really bad we park the trucks.

I really don`t miss putting on chains .

Though it took me very long to adjust to not sleeping in the truck.

I would wake up thinking the fuel jellied and the truck shut off.

Things were different back in those days.

Stupid dot. Chains off. Never needed them anyway. $880 fine if caught not running when required.

Just enough to look kinda cool.
My outfit just shuts down if it’s that bad but I’m getting some for the taco cause the 4by group i go with has been doing mountain runs and It’s gotten slick a few times. So I might as well pick some up cause I’m one of a few with a proper winch and recovery knowledge.

Got my truck back today. Gonna miss the freightliner I was driving for the rental, it was nice. Back in my old relic now, lol. But it's a good city truck, turns tight and has good visibility.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
You know how I said it looked like my old truck wasn't coming back? Well, regional management said that due to the situation with lack of new trucks, it was coming back...once it got out of the shop (again). Out of the shop, clutch takes a shit on the first linehaul run. New clutch put in in Milwaukee, comes back to us Mon evening. Tues, I'm back in it for the first time in 3 or 4 months. The new clutch isn't right, but it isn't terrible either...dragging just a little, never fully engages. Driver out Tues night writes it up as undriveable. Service takes a look at it early this morning and says there is something seriously wrong and there is only about 1/4" of adjustment left in it. Back to the shop in Milwaukee for who knows how long.

I get to the office and they assigned me into a Volvo for the day. Overnight driver put the steering column all the way up when he got back this morning. The pedal to set the steering column is broke, can't adjust the steering, I can't see most of the cluster. I tell them I can't drive like that and response is that's the last truck. Just then, one comes into the yard form the shop. Take that one. Three and a half hours later, check engine light and it derates. Barely pulls my trailer out of the dock I'm in. Give it 20 minutes and restart, back in business...until I get to my next stop. Down for the count, back to the yard (2 1/2 hours later) on the hook.

Between the bubblegum and baling wire repairs they're doing to try to keep trucks on the road while waiting for parts and some of the shyte diesel techs, some days get real challenging. Nothing unsafe, mind you, just bullshit "hope this works until we can get another truck back together." I've seen more trucks come in on the hook in the last 4 weeks than I've seen in the 18 months I've been here.

Most of the running issues on trucks is due to all the def emissions stuff that's on them. My old freightliner is so old it doesn't have any of that stuff on it. It rides rough and will beat you to death. But it turns tight, shifts well with a short throw and just works. It's old, rattles, dash is all cracked, ac is not the greatest, and it's in the shop alot. And the company absolutely will not spring for new trucks. But what do I care, 4 1/2 years till I retire, lol. And I'm still looking for something better.
The things you talk about was part of the reason I got out of ltl, musical trucks sucked! I like driving the same truck everyday.
Now I'm dealing with issues on my trailer. 2 bald tires, hole in the floor that they put a plate over so the forklifts can keep ripping it off, it's got a hub leak on one of the drop axles, and the etrack is coming off the walls in several places. They do the bare minimum for repairs. When it absolutely won't roll then they'll fix it.

I gotta agree all that Tier 4 level of emissions was the last straw .

I loved the old days simple wide spot tune up bigger button and perhaps a spring time to work!!

Done. Was a shitty week. My million mile plus beater mechanically runs great! It's everything else on it that's falling apart. They got me slotted for a new truck, probably this spring.
