Hey y’all. I’m taking my bushwhacker trailer out on vacation from Pittsburgh to the west coast week after next. The trailer weight is roughly 2000lbs. I was wondering if anybody has any experience towing a smallish camper on I-70 through the Colorado Rockies and if I should find a different route. My truck is the v6 4.0 trd off road. didn’t come with the tow package but I installed a brake controller and hitch receiver. Took the trailer to Maryland last month and seemed ok. I’m mainly wondering because I really want to go this way but was wondering if anything would mess me up in the mountains. I’m willing to eat the gas mileage in order to experience one of my favorite parts of the country. Thanks in advance.

You should be fine with it being 2000lbs. Hills will be a bitch and unexpected snow might be an issue but just stay steady, slow, and have a lot of room between you and the car/truck ahead of you.

    The truck will be fine.
Use your gears appropriately and it will make the trip more enjoy.

Good luck and have fun man:thumbsup:

You will definitely be ok, just take it slow and stay out of 5th on the long hills.

main thing to watch is transmission temps.
Grab a $20 Bluetooth OBD2 dongle on Amazon and the torque app. Easy and cheap way to keep an eye on things.

I’ll be hauling a 4400lb travel trailer up the mountains soon.

    My boat is about 200lbs

I can tow it prett much anywhere and still speed.

I do have the 6sp manual tranny.
You're auto will probably be annoyed, but you should be just fine

Do you have a temp guage for your tranny fluid?

I currently don’t but I’m going to get an OBD2 Bluetooth sensor like the other comments are suggested. My main concern is since my truck didn’t come with the tow package that there may be some components under the hood that I would be lacking. General consensus seems to be it’ll be all right as long as I keep an eye on the oil/tranny temp. I didn’t mention in the post but I have a 2013 Trd 4 x 4

im not sure exactly which one will work, I just remember the a Bluetooth obd2 dongle linked to the torque app was a cheap and effective way to get truck data but I went with the scan gauge in the end

Trailer is no problem, it maybe a little slippery at the tunnel and Vail pass when ya go, be cautious of those skiers.
