Been working on a few things lately as time permits. Had an issue on and off where my AC/Heater blower motor would only work on high, so i upgraded that to the updated style resistor and plug. I started out with butt connectors, removed the insulation from those, and then crimped them, heat shrink wrapped, electrical tape each individual one, and then wrapped the whole bundle in electrical tape as well.

I found the wiring diagrams and info here, but here's the short version for reference

Old Harness -> -> New Harness
White/Blue Stripe -> (Hi) -> Solid White
White/Black Stripe -> (Lo) -> White/ Black Stripe
Green/Yellow Stripe -> (M1) -> Solid Green
Blue/Black Stripe -> (M2) -> Solid Blue



That seems to have fixed the blower motor issues for now, so i moved onto other things. Got the tires rotated and greased the universal joints, and then installed a new

Aisin CKT065 clutch disc as well. I left the high clamp load M-Pact pressure plate in there with hopes of keeping the stock style disc alive for at least a few thousand miles. I ran a LuK stock clutch with their pressure plate when the turbo was first installed and it started slipping after 40 miles, so i'm praying the heavier pressure plate will help with that issue.

I've only driven it a few miles so far, but there are no more vibrations and i am able to leave the truck in gear while slowing down or coasting along, which is absolutely fantastic.

 

I’ve been meaning to ask if you installed the new clutch and how the combo was working out?

Me I’ve been trying to figure out what rear gear I should run for the swap that’s hopefully going to happen. Been buying parts and losing a lot of weight lately or should I my wallet has lost a lot!

Stupid question I know this is a Toyota Tacoma forum but doe’s anyone here have a good suggestion on the RPM’s an 5.3 LS should be turning at say 70 mph? @BassAckwards Sir I apologize for using your thread to ask my questions. I don’t want to do a build thread until I know my plans are Reality!
The TKO trans has such a tall overdrive of .68. Maybe I should have went with the newer TKX with a .72 overdrive. I just know the 6 speed Tremec’s have a stupid tall .50 overdrive.

The problem is w/ the 8.4 third member w/ 8.25” ring gear will probably be the weak point in the drivetrain. And with the lower gear comes a smaller weaker pinion gear. I guess you can say I’m a bit worried.

 

It feels good, but i havent driven it enough to say for sure whether it will hold up over the long term.

you can plug in your tire size and rear axle ratio and then either select your trans or plug in the ratios and down below it will tell you what RPMs you'll be turning at a given speed. i would like to be in the 2200-2500rpm range at 70-75 but that's my personal preference. I would wait to cross the rear axle bridge till it's necessary. I'm running 5.29s and 34 inch tires right now and my 8.4 hasnt complained yet. I suspect a lot of how that will hold up will be based on how you drive it, but i would wait to upgrade until it causes you problems, because that can get expensive in a hurry

 

Well looks like you got your comfort and torque capacity, all in one package finally.

 

I sure hope so. I have been taking it easy on the clutch so it hasnt gotten the juice yet lol. Sure is nice to be able to drive it like normal again though. I am hopeful that the stiffer pressure plate will help with more tq capacity and the days of dropping the transmission are over

 

Thanks my friend, Silver Transmissions has one designated just for Tremec and some others transmission’s. Just type in the model number and it loads all the gears. You just plug in Tire Dia., Gear & RPM’s.
I too was thinking 2250 RPM’s at 70 but was told that’s just a little high WTF!
I was told closer to 2000 at 70. Hmmm so in 5th / high gear @ 55 the engine will lugging @ 1650. Hmmm, I don’t like that!

@Torspd, Had any issues with the 8.4 Third member and may I ask what gear you have?

Right now I have a 3.73 with a TrueTrac in a box and running 28.6” rubber or 245/50-19 but was thinking about going to a 28.1” or 255/45-19 but the wheel is 8.5” wide and I was thinking a 9” wide wheel would be a bit better for 255 rubber.

 

@Hayrider , I have not had any issues with this 3rd member. Since dropping down from 35's. Mine has the TruTrac also. Couldn't be happier with its performance. Whether on the road course, or anywhere else.

 

Well a quick update, have about 350ish miles on the new Aisin clutch disc/M-Pact heavy duty pressure plate and all is well. It has held up to 4lbs of boost but i am afraid to give it the juice.. Sure does drive nice though! Something i've noticed so far is that the stiffer pressure plate makes even the stock style disc much more grabby

 

I had mentioned my clutch slipping when really getting on it and was laughed at, as if it was all wishful thinking in my head.

 

Sounds like it is time for @BassAckwards to give it the full can of beans then.

 

I have had the same exact thing happen on the stock style LUK clutch and PP. it would hold fine up to about 6-7lbs and then the RPMs would shoot up if it spiked above that. do you have a stiffer PP on yours?

It probably is but I don’t want to be disappointed

The gentleman who I have lined up to install is swearing I need to change the rear Diff…

I’m interested to see if the stiffer pp I installed helps the stock disc hang on at our power levels.

Currently freezing my ass off in it installing gears haha.. maybe this afternoon?
