Trailer Wiring - Can someone snap some pics for me?

I'm trying to modify the trailer wiring on my 2nd gen but running into some issues and wondering if I could some some parts from a 3rd gen in order to accomplish my goal.

Can someone, with a 3rd gen with a tow package take some pics for me? I'm in need of:

1. Pics of the backside of your trailer wiring connector
2. Follow the wiring that comes out of the back of the trailer wiring connector and take a picture of the next connector it plugs into.

As an example, here's an example of what both look like on my 2nd gen:

Third gen tow wiring is part of the rear harness. There is the connector to the tow plug and that’s it. It dies into the loom about 9” upstream.

No problem. Just curious, what are you trying to do? Upgrade to the 4/7 factory combo plug or something else?

 

Essentially, yes.

On the 2nd gen the trailer wiring connector hangs under the bumper and is prone to breaking during off roading. There are relocation brackets available but I would rather just move mine up into the bumper like a 3rd gen - likely hide it behind the license plate. I also want to upgrade from the current 7-pin only connector and install a 7/4 pin connector. I was hoping there was a plug'n'play to make this happen - preferably using all OEM parts - but I'm thinking this may not be possible.

 

Yeah, I figured that’s what you’re after. My old frontier had it hanging under the bumper also - hated that. I bought a combo 4/7 from Hopkins that did the job. I used a hole saw to get it into the bumper and then crimped on Deutsch connectors to the Hopkins and the factory wiring so I could make it disconnectable.

The Hopkins was a chunky thing but it worked and didn’t look bad to me.

you can also buy oval shaped 7/4s and splice them as well, but you’ll have to cut that oval hole. You’ll still have to splice no matter what you do, but I wouldn’t let that hold you back.

 

I'm not gonna give up just yet, but it's looking less and less likely that I'll find the right adapter harness. After 25yrs of working on cars I'm just completely fed up with butt splice connectors. They're lame, they look bad, they are prone to issues... they're an absolute last resort for me. But I'm a picky, ODC kinda guy.

I already have an aftermarket Hopkins 7/4 connector since I figured I could return it if needed and wouldn't be able to do that with an OEM one. It doesn't look that bad like a lot of the aftermarket ones. Not much different from the OEM 3rd gen one. So I'll be happy with that if I can get it wired without any splices.

 

Yeah I don’t use heat shrink butt splices anymore. If I’m butt splicing, I’m using non insulated barrel terminals from del city and my Thomas and betts

WT111M that crimps them insanely tight. My own heat shrink of choice goes over the splice and seals it forever. Never had a problem that way.

I stagger them so they don’t end up in a fat ass bundle, and then wrap over them with exterior tape from Tesa.

I’m sure you’ll come to a reasonable conclusion eventually. Good luck with it.

 

Yeah, pretty similar over here in terms of how I deal with it when needed. I just try to avoid it at all costs. It seems like in this day and age it should be easy enough to find the right adapter or at least the right pins and connectors so you can build your own vs splicing.

 

Can you get the number off the connector and order it separately with pins? I did that on my 1st gen. Then you can get a 4/7 with a pigtail and crimp the pins, assemble the connector and you have a harness with no splices.

there are a few guy here that do custom harnesses and plat light delete in reverse kits
they might know the part numbers for the connector

 

Do you have any resources for finding that info? I've never had luck finding connectors before.

Do you know their member names? I'm not familiar with these guys.
