I was washing my car the other day and while drying it I found rock chips on side of back passenger door.

    my main concern is rust.

Should I buy touch up paint from Toyota and apply it to prevent rust in future or do I leave it as is?

Just leave it, any touch up paints going to make it look worse or more noticeable. Primer is underneath the paint, don’t worry about it. Thats going to happen unless you never drive your truck and it sits in a glass case.

I get disposable touch up paint applicators with a sharp tip. If you just cover the chip with paint, then it won't look bad.
If you go crazy with a brush applicator, it will look bad.
Clean with alcohol and touch up.

Been lucky so far with the paint chips from rocks vs when i owned my tundra that would be loaded with them by this time. I give credit to the ceramic glass protection that was done on the truck nearly 3 years ago. I've had some nasty stuff collect on the vehicles exterior, yet it wipes right off instead of imbedding in the paint like i got on my tundra that didn't have this treatment.

Only 2 choices: Leave it alone, you’ll drive yourself crazy trying to fix these and it’ll look like crap.

It depends on your fine motor skills. From your question, take it to a professional who does touch up.

I disagree. You don't go crazy with the brush but rather fill in the spot by being careful and using only the tip of the brush....using the least amount of paint possible.

Totally agree with @HAVOC on the dr colorchip suggestion. It is well worth the effort to cover those up.

OEM tube step cuts down on a lot of that.

When i had the tundra i use take a dab of matching paint with a very fine brush an artist would have and fill in the chip. If just the clear coat, i had one of these clear coat pens to go over that spot. These pens work great to fill in scratch's. You couldn't tell where the scratch was once it dried.

For the very tiny chips like those. I use the tip of a tooth pic to dab them (oem) touch-up. Larger the brush applicator. Just take your time.

I got 2-3 on mine. Small but I didn't want them to get bigger. The touch-up paint matched perfectly but you have to apply just a tiny bit and be real careful. A year later I have a difficult time finding the spots unless I look at a specific angle. Be prepared to wipe it off and start over a few times.

fill the chip with oem touchup paint. u might have to do it a few times as the paint shrinks up as it dries. when close to level, fill it again to level with oem clear coat touchup paint. it won't be completely invisible but does a good job and most importantly, provides protection of the primer. once the primer is broken thru you are looking at a much bigger job if it starts rusting.

Don’t use the brush that comes in the paint tube! Get a fine hobby brush and fill the chip in two or three times otherwise it will look like crap.

Factory lift kit. Lomax tri fold Tonneau.
Clean the spot. I use alcohol. Use Correct color paint and a #000 brush works good. Found by model paint area at a hobby store etc. It may take several applications to fill in chip. Don’t try to fill chip in with just one application. Work from center to edge. If you don’t like how it looks just wipe off with paint thinner and try again. It will not be perfect but ends up looking better then a chip.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Use a smaller brush or toothpick with oem touch up paint. Then use the Langka blob eliminator system which smooths the bump of paint down to level with adjacent surface. It’s easy and unless you are right up on it and know where to look you’ll never see it.

You’ll also get plenty of those on the front bumper over time. Be prepared.

    Thanks for the info guys.
I will see what I am going to do.
I may talk to professionals and see what they suggest.
I don’t mind the rock chips it will happen anyway sooner or later. I am just planning to keep the truck for a long time 10 or 15 plus years. I just don’t want those chips to start rusting and cause bigger problems.
I will post an update on what I decided to do and how it turns out.

Like some have mentioned a fine paintbrush or toothpick. Least amount of paint as possible, it will take a few light coats but the thinner the better. Make sure you shake up the oem touch up paint really well.
