Needing to swap out my motor (bent rod) in my 2011 DCLB. I have found one with only 3,000 miles on it (!!), but the salvage yard is telling me it is incompatible. It's from a 2010 FJC, and my research tells me that the reason it's incompatible is that it has Dual VVT-i (both intake *and* exhaust), whereas all other years and models that use the 1GRFE have Single VVT-i (intake only).

    So here's my question.

Anyone have even the slightest info on this? My research isn't bringing up hardly anything.
Should I go ahead and see about fitting this in my truck? I assume I would need the ECM, too...?...
Or maybe someone has a Toyota tech that knows hir stuff and is willing to talk shop?
Maybe I could use it without connecting the exhaust adjuster? Until I can locate and/or figure out how to make it work in my Taco?

Don't know if anyone has done it. But just some comments, I strongly suspect the ECU would be required at a minimum, not sure if your harness will plug up directly to the new ECU though. Also not sure if you would need the FJ's harness to make this work either. I would think you'll need to find more ECU/harness knowledge then engine knowledge.

You'll need the whole harness, and ECU. There might be different plugs from the FJ which might not used, and might cause some functionality issues or not.

The ecu/key would have to be decoded to your truck, by Toyota.

The engine is also a poorer design than your current one. Inherently weaker. It would seriously be a lot easier to swap in a single VVT engine.

Interested to hear why the dual is weaker than the single. Whats your reasoning in this?

Less counterweight weights on the crank. Weaker ring land/ring combo.

Can't handle the same boost as a single VVT engine, without breaking something. I think it is 5-6psi max?

What about a head swap? Swapping the single for a dual and using the duals ecu and harness? Just out of curiosity.

If the heads are similar enough to bolt over, and mate flush with the timing cover. Possibly.

Lucario Runner would know best on that. Gadget would also.
