Crawling up a steep hill in 4LO in first gear is pretty much a point-and-shoot exercise. Some people tend to over-rev the engine as they think they are going too slow (fear of rolling backwards) but if you take your time and just maintain a steady velocity upwards at ~2500-3000 rpm, you'll be fine.

The hill hold IS in included in the Sport but not the OR. My wife has the former and absolutely loves it...bothers me when I drive her truck because I "automatically" grab the hand brake and wonder why the truck doesn't move when I want it to. It's a nice feature, and she really appreciates it. My 25 YO daughter has a tiny econobox (MT, crank windows, no air conditioning) and that's the number one thing she would have liked for driving in Vancouver.

Yes, this. I have the 2LO mod installed, in my opinion it should be an OEM feature. Required in order to safely and effectively use reverse on extended hard/dry pavement hills & driveways, esp. while towing.

Unfortunately they were only made for 2nd gens, 2005-2015. See details in this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2lo-modules.708941/

Seems unlikely, but maybe some enterprising soul wants to either license, or reverse-engineer, the original creator's design & adapt it for 3rd gens.

That's good news. Plug-and-play "2LO Module" compatibility with 3rd gens, with no mods to vehicle or the 2LO module itself, would tend to suggest that there have been few (possibly absolutely zero ? ) changes to the 4WD HI / LO subsystems between the 2nd & 3rd gen tacomas? If true that would allow everyone to cross-pollinate tech knowledge & troubleshooting experience for 4WD issues across both generations.

    re: Hill Hold

My car has hill hold - I don't really care for it, don't use it/rely on it and pretty much forgot about it even being there till I read about it above/in this thread

I am glad my truck does not have this feature - it seems like a cheat
Off the brake, on the throttle/release the clutch - if you know the engagement point of the clutch/throttle, it shouldn't be an issue -

But I will say this - many moons ago, @ 16 - I went to the DMV in Florida [flat AF] to take my driving exam in my dad's MT Accord.
The [very grumpy] woman giving the exam found the ONLY hill in the whole county and had me start from a dead stop - pulling out onto a major road, where people were doing like 60mph - and I ate the shit out of that clutch - I will never/ever forget that smell, the smell of failure..

I got my DL that day but I'll be damned if I can't start smoothly/no rolling on a hill ever since.

i had a 2010 MT , i had to relearn how to drive a standard transmission . From what i understand , i stand to be corrected . The PCM keeps the RPM's up after i let go of the throttle , this is to burn off excess gas in the intake manifold , this is supposed to help our enviornment When coming up through the gears when i shift to a higher gear i had to hesitate before letting the clutch out to let the RPM's drop to match the next gear i had selected. I am thinking about a 2023 , i would love to buy a MT but if the new trucks are still like my 2010 i might consider going back to another automatic

All good, I just happened to see it and it caught my eye because my Lexus uses an RA62.

Some things are more complex on the 2016+ and some are simpler for sure.

Your son still dating her, she sounds like marriage material (especially if the NSX can be a wedding present).
