Are these cars made of bubblegum?

For background, im the new owner of an 06 AC 4cyl manual wil 165k on the odo. This car has had some weird issues since i got it a few months back but this takes the cake

noticed my car had an add-on tailgate lock but I didnt get a key with the car so i decided to take the tailgate apart to pull the assembly out and change the lock assembly. Removed the inner tailgate skin and find the outer sheetmetal is not attached to the inner frame, appears to be held together with some type of putty… See pic

so last week im under the hood replacing the serp belt when i notice the underside of the hood is the same, surface sheetmetal detached from the inner skin and looks like glue.

Also noticed that the hood flaps in the wind above 80mph, not the hood being loose, but the center of the hood collapsing down or flapping like its being compressed by the air moving over it. Hard to see in this evening pic but the whole middle of the hood is bubbled down on the highway.

Am i expecting too much from Toyota here or was it intentional to build shitty cars held together with bubblegum?

seriously considering going back to jeep after this.

    discuss…

A TON of cars/trucks have the same exact bonding method/material. Including Jeep. It's in the doors, hoods, and other parts. Your truck is over 15 years old, what did you expect?

My first 5 cars were 20-30yr old volkswagens and i cant say any of the used cars ive had have ever been particularly well cared for. Spent a fair amount of time scavenging junkyards for project cars over the years too. Never seen this. Is there a DIY repair method or is my whole truck just gonna be loosey goosey?

Not sure how old the VWs were..nor am I really up on them in general having never owned one.

That said I surmise it's a sign of the times versus a brand only thing?

Over 80 mph? It’s a truck not a sports car.

That's sound dampening foam, it cuts down on vibrations between the inner shell and outer skin. Almost every manufacture uses it in all hoods, doors, trunks, roof panels, lift gates, and tailgates. Someone tap dancing on your hood? That doesn't look like normal wear and tear.

I would grab some 1k seam sealer and put a nice bead on top of the foam ball and try to bend back the brackets.

I mean, it’s a 17 year old vehicle….. you bought it used so you never know how the previous owner(s) treated it

Tacomas are structurally flimsy (like an airplane) but mechanically and electrically very robust.

Feel free to buy a 2006 Liberty or Grand Cherokee. Be sure to double your budget for repairs.

Manufactures could spotweld it together or even stitch-weld it. I don't think any of us wants to pay the price as it would consume a huge amount of time for prepping before painting to get a finish the consumer would expect.

Hi all, I bought a 17 year old vehicle. I don't have any clue how ALL modern vehicles are assembled. I also don't have a clue how the previous owners treated this vehicle. I abuse the crap out of this truck and I break sppeding laws on a regular basis. I'm thoroughly disgusted at the quality of this vehicles build! I've read these 2nd gen Tacomas only last 450,000+ miles! Absurd!
