Follow up on my prior post regarding SnugTop. I bought a SnugTop Rebel with the Sportsman package. The Sportsman package has the 500 lbs rating. Just confirmed with SnugTop this is for a dynamic load. Also, they did say that the actual rack needs to be rated to the same rating as the roof to make it all work.

While obvious, they also said it is best to spread the load out as much as possible. To me this is a good reason to consider an RTT more like the Autohome b/c it is flat and does not cantilever off the sides.

Finally, get Win Doors for the side. Best decision I ever made for a truck.

    Hope that helps...

Bumping this because I never saw what Cole wrote. I find it a little hard to believe that Leer would have a 450lb STATIC rating on their commercial shell and SnugTop has a 500lb DYNAMIC rating.

I REALLY REALLY want a RTT, but I just don't think I can bring myself to spend $$$ on a topper and sleep well at night knowing I am over the "limit." More power to you guys that say you would throw 1000lbs up on it.

If you're really worried about it, maybe try Autohome's Columbus Carbon Fiber model. The small version only weighs 73 lbs which is a nice weight savings. Of course the kicker is that it costs a shit-ton more.

Yup. I couldn't be any more pleased with mine (Maggiolina). Their shipping isn't exactly free either. When I bought it I did the math and it was actually less for me to drive to their shop in Sonoma, CA and pick it up than have them freight it.

thats crazy. 5k for a tent. That's flippac money. I should probably just get over being paranoid, pick up a shell and roll with it. It seems thats what most people do and you don't hear stories of catastrophic failures.

I read someone over on expedition portal reference a guy who had his bed spread from the lateral forces, but my guess is that was a fluke problem.

My 1990 Ford Ranger bed spread and actually started to tear from the rear forward from lateral forces put onto the rear of the bedsides by my overhead lumber rack

    It can happen

That is a lot of coin, but their quality is outstanding and it'll put up with many, many years of use.

Yeah, I would think having it on top of a reinforced cap rather than a tube-style bedrail-mount rack would be better at limiting side forces due to the wrap-around nature of the cap's rear corners having less flex.
