Dayman's Karate Class- from SAS’ed Taco, bouncer, IFS 4Runner, and now a Jeep!

I wish I knew haha my guess is 2-3 months. I’m not sure if I want to tackle gearing the diffs or not. Also, I may farm out the driveshafts to JE Reel or similar if it’s cost effective vs making my own.

 

I know how big projects are man, looks really good so far. I get my driveshafts made by Rocket City Offroad in Huntsville. I take them my driveshafts and tell them the length I need. They charge $75 to shorten and balance one and $75 plus tubing to make them longer.

 

Nice. I’ll check them out. Still figuring out yokes, flanges, u joints and all that jazz, but know I want DOM shafts.

 

I been thinking about doing DOM driveshaft tubes too, I need to figure out what size is the closest to the Toyota driveshaft yoke. I can get either the yoke or the tube machined to fit together. I thought about upgrading everything but I have only ever broke one yoke on all the Toyota driveshafts I have ever had.

 

Some progress mounting coil overs. Realized I’d need to build some mounts into the engine bay. Should be enough slack in the fuse box to push it to the side luckily.

 

Spent 2.5 hours figuring out where to place that tube so I don’t have to relocate everything under the hood. Tube notches are starting to pile up on this build

 

It's crazy how many cuts and welds you have to do when doing a solid axle swap and linking a truck. Just imagine the cost if you had to pay someone to do it.

 

So many little things that have to be done to make things fit and work right it’s crazy.

The only thing worse than thinking about what it’d cost for someone else to do it is to think about how little value these things retain when you try to sell them haha

hindsight is 20/20, but if I had to do it over again I would have stopped before cutting anything on the taco, sold it and bought a used buggy/crawler that needed some extracurricular work.

 

Yeah, it's hard to try and get just vehicle and parts cost, impossible to get labor too.
I almost did the same thing but I thought if I sell my truck I could use that money to start building the Samurai. I only gave $3500 for both my Samurais. I have spent a lot of money on building the black one.
I used all the things I took off the black one to build the brown one. I just have a few odds and ends to get it rolling.

 

That’s not bad at all. I’m hoping to have the front end on the ground this weekend. Maybe it’ll move a little faster after that. Still not sure if I want to regear myself or find someone. Gears, exhaust and driveshafts are my three unknowns. Everything else I’ve pretty much got squared away.

 

I regeared one and all the rest I have got ECGS to do them and install lockers while they had them.
Are you using Toyota driveshafts? If you do the 89 to 95 4Runners rear driveshafts have 42 degrees of operating angle at the joints, they have the most of all the Toyotas.

 

Did you drive them up there or ship? I think I’ll end up doing a diy driveshaft either from WOD, BK or similar. double cardan in the front. Gotta keep a two piece in the rear. 1410 joints

Wish I could do that haha Might see if anyone wants to do it and make some extra coin around here first.

 

Reason I get them to do it is their five year warranty.

 

That’d be nice. I’d have to tote the whole axle up there though so that wouldn’t be as appealing for me haha

 

Make an appointment and do a road trip would be your only way, your axles would be costly to ship for sure.
