I've got a Cobra 19 mini cb radio, and a pair of handheld walkie-talkies for spotting/wheeling with my brother since he doesn't have comms in his F-150.

Got a pic of the beautiful AZ sunset from the ASU Polytech campus at Gateway airport. Man, I love this state.

    I use a midland mxt115 with a 3ft antenna

also have a few handhelds that can tap into some the same chanels which is good for spotting.

edit: GMRS is a bit better than cb imo. Further range with the use of repeaters in case of emergencies. GMRS requires a license to operate tho

another edit: GMRS also has privacy channels which allows you to in a way mute out other people on the same channel which is nice for high pop areas

You can get certain ham radios and mod them to talk to GMRS and they can do the race radio freqs also. GMRS can talk to FRS/GMRS. CB is CB only and sucks now a days.

CB only works if you roll with guys who have cb. Mine is set up for pretty much line of sight only, I only get about 1-2 miles of range. I'd like to get into ham, but I don't have time to study for it.

Im just getting into understanding it. Its a lot at first but will make sense soon enough. Understanding the different types and what frequency of each...
Is it necessary to get a FCC license? Just scratching surface im sure

GMRS yes, its $10 for a 10 yr license. Ham, yes testing and license.
Most are running GMRS now. So, i'd just get cheap handheld and your good for most. Unless you want better power and range

Stuff that costs more than my wife thinks.
In Mesa, but we spend plenty of time in Scottsdale - I'm assuming this is just mountain caps that got snow - it's dry just a few miles south.

For Comms, +1 to GMRS, as it's easy. I have BTech, but that was just after reading through reviews on Amazon. Works fine for me, have a loaner for friends, or when the wife drives her colorado separate.

The license is to use the high power channels you could technically use the same FRS channels and not need a license but for $10 its a no brainer. The range on it is actually pretty ridiculous. If I was out on ironwood in San Tan Valley I bet I could pick you up in aj

edit: Its been a while since I got mine its actually $35

This. I think the hardest part of the process was trying to get their payment system to work to give them the $10.

Has anyone here taken the test? I'm looking into it just to be on the safe side and learn enough about these to use them correctly.

No test, that would be for a Ham license

    Edit: Heres your "test"

    • If an authorized FCC representative request to inspect a GMRS station (this means anything GMRS: handheld, mobile unit, base units, etc), the operator must make the station and any station records available
    • No messages in connection with any activity that is against Federal, State, or local law
    • No false or deceptive messages
    • No coded messages with hidden meanings (“10 codes” are allowed)
    • No music, whistling, sound effects or material to amuse or entertain
    • No ads or offers for the sale of goods or services
    • No ads for political candidate or political campaign
    • No international distress signals (i.e. Mayday) unless in a vehicle in immediate danger
    • No communicating with stations in the Amateur Radio Service, any unauthorized station, or to any foreign station
    • No continuous or uninterrupted transmissions (unless communications have to do with the immediate safety of life or property)
    • No messages for public address systems
    • Must identify using FCC-assigned call sign at the end of transmissions and at periodic intervals during transmissions

Follow the rules and thats it :D
