surprised no one has said, mileage and rough roads, pot holes damage hub and bearings fairly easily. some vehicles more than others. this is not a part failure, or worn out, this is driving, impact, use damage. our crosstrek has had 5 or 6 replaced in 145000 miles, our s10 blazer 5-6 in 150000, Impala somewhere around 10 in 225000. a sharp hit, bump, drop, pothole, bearing or race gets a flat spot, and the whining or howling starts. it is a maintenance issue. I am Surprised Toyota is covering it. good for you! Ski

    SUPER annoying. VERY scary. 100%.

THAT's what they TELL us. It's a good thing they don't TELL us what to THINK.

    Hey, funny thing here:
The service guy said my parts are only covered for the remainder of my warranty which is 1600 miles. The back of the work order I signed says a lot of things:

Parts are good for 12 months regardless of miles or who purchases them (Toyota or me). - Easily provable
If the problem is not alleviated, the warranty period is automatically extended. - Challenge but I think I would win.
The Song-Beverly Act says they have to remedy the problem if its not resolved or I get a refund or replacement for the truck. - Hard challenge, probably involves a lawyer, but it also sounds like the dealer would have to back down and get Toyota involved.

Just had my rear drivers side wheel bearing replaced on the 27th. Bad bearing at 27,000 miles. Dealership wouldn't budge on covering it under the powertrain warranty so I had to pay out of pocket. I take mine off roading often and I have aftermarket leaf springs, shocks, tires, and rims.

Mine is in the shop now to get the backing plate replaced under warranty and to replace the backing plate, you have to press off the bearing. The tech said he won't press a used bearing back on the axle shaft so the bearing is being covered under warranty as well. MSRP of almost $500. Bad part is, over 200 bearings are backordered so none to be had. So I just wait and drive the loaner till it is fixed.

Hate to say it but once you start modifying the warranties are dead.I mean any excuse for the dealer. You should of waited a few years before doing any mods. Just saying.

So you believe the Mexico built trucks are of lesser quality? Does Toyota lack the skill to set up and support a robust Quality Process?
Many Subaru models are still made in Japan and have had plenty of problems through the years.

Yes, but Subaru have come a long ways with quality and durability and are as good as the Toyota. That is why Toyota bought some shares in Subaru if you did not know that.

Defect from the factory. Rivet that the shoes rest against bent, causing the shoes to bend into the axle and lock up the wheel.

I’m a bit surprised both your rear wheel bearings failed at 58k miles. Did you ask how they diagnosed the proposed root cause? Have you seen the failed bearings?

If they really did fail, the root cause could be some other problem that shortened the life of the bearings. If that’s the case, the new bearings might fail prematurely as well unless the real problem is addressed

Replying to say I'm dealing with something very similar on my 2018. I started to notice a funky groaning/creaking from my rear axle so I brought it in and they diagnosed it as a bad bearing. Unlike you, I've got 72,000 miles so it's out of pocket for me :(

Warranty is always from the date of purchase, having a part replaced under that warranty doesn't typically reset that warranty.

I know in Canada, Toyota has or had a minimum warranty time, so if you replace a part under warranty on the last day of warranty, it was (from memory) 6 months or the remainder of your warranty, whichever is longer. I took a quick look through the Toyota USA warranty policy and procedures manual and don't see something similar, but I did however find the following on Toyota USA's website:

    So, there you go.

I just bought a 2023 Tacoma 2 weeks ago. I barley put 100 miles on it and all the dash lights turned on while I was driving. Took it to the dealer, they had it for 4 days now and finally told me that the right rear wheel bearing is defective.

Dealer, texted me today saying the wheel bearing assembly is back ordered (350 units) for about a month. Guess I'll keep the loaner for now.

Anything can fail, but this truly feels like the tech wanted to make money and only one bearing had to be replaced.

Some dealers are restricted by warranty work, and Toyota will microscope why they called two bearings instead of one.

Not on our axles. We have sealed wheel bearing assemblies that are lubed internally and pressed onto the axle shaft. The rear diff fluid does no wheel bearing lubrication duty.

Took my 2021 Tacoma in for scheduled maintenance dealer says both rear wheel bearings are leaking . The truck has only 17000km. On it and has never been off road.Sure warranty covers it now but how long before it happens again when warranty is gone.Bought this truck thinking it was bullet proof.Man it might be a expensive mistake.

The bearings themselves don’t get any oil. There are seals in the axle tubes to keep gear oil from reaching the wheel bearings. If you blew both seals, then you could be experiencing what you are. Only way I can think of both seals being blown would be if the axle breather is clogged.

Where are they seeing the leaking oil?
