IMG_20221222_140310731.jpg IMG_20230120_153954409.jpg I was against 285s when I lifted my truck almost 4 years ago. I now have about 20k miles on my truck @ 16k miles on the lift. I was told by the local 4wd shop in our parts that with my set up when they installed the 5100s I could go 285s. Well a few months ago I added a new set of Toyo at3s SL rated and the fit was perfect. I went back to my local off-road shop and had them do an alignment and raise the front 5100s to the 5th perch from the 4th. The ride is so much better but it may be the newly designed Toyo at3s. The aggressive look is what I wanted. So no rubbing, no cab chop or pinch weld needed, still running the factory mud guards, getting 18 plus around town. The same day I had the tune updated to the new KDMAX Pro 9 and still don't feel any loss of power or mps. My Tuner also used an inline calibration from Rough Country and got the speedometer all dialed in. I could not have asked for a better setup than this. So I lucked out, did my research and everything came out perfect, the ride is awesome, no cutting, trimming, good mpgs,no loss of power, retaining factory mud guards and looks awesome. I swear it looks as if my truck came stock from Toyota looking like this as I get asked this sometimes by fellow Tacoma owners.

Every third gen will rub with 285s off road maxing out the stuff at various degrees of turn. Truly no rub requires trimming.

Hasn't rubbed since installed and I don't think its going to. But every truck is tweaked a little different, It doesn't seem so in this case.

A little off topic and I only have a 2nd Gen with 265/75/16, but I like your garage and I like your style.

Same here. 285's on 16's, uniball uca's. daily driver, hunting and exploring truck. 1300 lb trailer at times. 60,000 miles on this setup w/o any issues at this point. Truck has been on some technical trails including back way into crown king and the oro bell mine. Bashed skids, crossmembers and good use of sliders sometimes had me wishing for a little more height, but no articulation issues or rubbing. I did add the ecgs bushing; at about 12000 on the lift, I could here and feel the needle bearing.

Definitely. 285’s are perfect. Once you get them close TW and never return. Otherwise 285’s turn into 35’s, which turn into 37’s, it never ends.

Best thing I've read on the Internet about affects of lifting a truck. Only two things that weren't touched on. How the lift and increased tire size affects longevity of the truck and resale-ability. I image longevity is negatively impacted, ie parts wear out faster, and harder to sell the truck if needed/desired because not everyone wants a modded truck and even those that want to mod want a blank slate instead of inheriting someone else's vision. To me, buying a modded vehicle is like resuming someone else's saved game.

    Great post, COOutlaw!

I've ran 285s on stock wheels for almost 30k miles and don't rub anywhere except on my UCA when the steering is maxed

Nice truck @Toyota09 , What sort of suspension setup do you have going? Like @tacosr5 said, do you too not have any rubbing at all using the stock OR wheels?....Reason I ask is cuz your truck looks similar to what I have goin on. I've been goin back n forth on buying wheels AND tires, or just throwing some 285s on the stocks.

I would recommend using some .25" wheel spacers to get the tire away from the UCA but not too far to rub on the cab mount

I have icon stage 5, lifted about 2.25 in the front. Rear is icon rxt, plus airbags for when I add my camper. Has some rake which I like. I have 1.25 spidertrax spacers, have driven 3k miles with a Four wheel camper on them no problems. No cmc, I rub a tiny bit at 3/4 while flexing or backing out but didn't rub if I turn my coils up a turn which puts me about 2.5" lift in front. Happy with mild rub and better cv angles. I refuse to cut my truck because I do not want it to have the opportunity to be deemed a "frame modification" if anything ever happened.
