If you have recently purchased a Gen 3, V6, AT Tacoma and are considering regearing you might benefit from reading this first. A little background. I purchased a new 2022 Tacoma, SR, V6, AT, 4WD Tacoma with 33” tires. Almost immediately I was terribly disappointed with the shift points on the truck and really wondered if I had made a mistake. After searching the forum I learned that the common solutions were tunes and regearing. With under 1,000 miles on the clock I was ready to regear it. I was ready to purchase the gear set and then the vendor raised the price at the last minute so I paused.

I thought I would try another approach and began driving the truck in sport mode. In this mode it does not go beyond 4th gear. That turned out to work great around town and I was very happy with the performance. What I do at freeway speeds is I upshift to 5th when I am over 60-65 MPH. This also works great and the truck is not constantly shifting down 1-2 gears. 6th gear is completely useless and I never shift it into 6th. Maybe if I was doing 80+ I could use it but I don’t drive that fast. Anyway, give it a try as it may save you some money. Long-term I will probably tune the truck and may even regear at some point down the road. But, in the meantime I have put another 1,300 miles on the truck and I am pretty happy with the performance.

IMO there's no substitute for correcting the leverage that the driveline has against the wheels.

Look into the Overland Taylor Tune. It makes the 3rd gen more drivable with 33s and with all of the extra weight I have with a bumper, roof rack, skid plates and sliders the truck can manage 75mph without having to modulating the throttle all the time like with the stock configuration. When I go to 34s I'll need gears for sure but I might decide on getting 4.88s instead of 5.29s because the tune makes that much difference.

    Correct. I don’t need or use 6th.

Or the wheels against the driveline for that matter. A certain amount of engine braking can be recovered. It goes both ways

youre putting strain on the engine and transmission. the price tag for a regear is less then those. stop modding your truck if you cant do it properly.

Got to bring the rpms up to the fun zone. Do not low rpm lug these V6 engines. If you do lug the truck, it learns your driving style and it will always be shifting.

I've got the 4 banger and have no issue with 6th either. However, this is mainly due to the fact that our motor makes peak torque lower and we have shorter gears than the v6 guys.

Ok, 5 months of experimenting in sport mode and today I dropped of my truck for 5.29s. Got tired of the gear searching and never being able to use 6th gear. Really looking forward to seeing how the re-gear wakes up the truck! Also, will be towing in the near future and thinking the re-gear will help with that as well.
