Im not implying there is a world wide transition problem on Tacomas. Just that there are a few same problem, same mileage, all I’m same time frame. Nothing deeper than that.

Sounds like the bottom’s falling out these 6-7 yr old transmissions, and changing the AFT won’t do jack.
Leads me to wonder, am I next?

Incorrect. Check your warranty and maintenance guide (.pdf for OP's year). It is in black & white under the additional maintenance items for special operating conditions at the 60k mark / 72 month. If Toyota insisted on not changing transmission oil why would it be an additional maintenance item?

they rather just replace everything than actually fix stuff. it's pathetic.

it's a very good transmission. i highly doubt it has failed.

    My 2ng gen did this.

Strange rumple strip feel between certain gears at light cruise. Shifting to neutral while underway and the shake/shudder would stop.

Independent Toyota tech added Lube Guard Platinum (can be found on Amazon) and the was issue was GONE!

It’s cheap enough to drain and fill the trans along with Lube Guard just to see what happens.

It depends on what they mean by changing. They do not want you to do a complete fluid change...I was told that when I had my tundra. Just a 4 qt drain and refill. I did that every 15k miles as recommended by my dealer, and nearly 300k miles and 19 years later that asin transmission was still performing well.

we are all a bit special. i rather have new fluid then ruin a perfectly good transmission with old/dirty fluid.

Guess when you try to schedule a transmission fluid flush, you shouldn’t mention it’s shuttering. Everyone wants to do their own diagnosis before performing any service. But thanks for all the comments, fellas. I have an appointment on the 16th with an independent transmission specialist.

At least they didnt forget to put your fill plug back on, like the dealer I took it to, then lie on the paper work stating “customer noticed a leak”.

Needless to say I saved all emails, reached out to corporate and filed a complaint/case. Hate to be this way but its pretty fucked up on their part.

    Update:

Took it to an automatic transmission specialist who says it’s the torque converter. Officially need a new transmission and it just so happens they’re on backorder
Appreciate the feedback fellas. Enjoy your Tacomas and their perfect transmissions!

i've felt this before and it feels like you are lugging the engine in too high of gear (if it was a manual). maybe the torque converter could use some friction modifiers. not sure if I want to experiment with that...

    Correct. Torque converter shutter.
Solved by adding a specific friction modifier. It’s in my post you quoted.

Just wondering why you cant just replace the torque converter? Did it damage the transmission? Some rav4's had a recall on torque converter shutter said it was like a rumble strip at low speed. The fix on that was replace tc.

Hey Gm tech here, the half tons were pretty known for torque converter shudder (rumble strip feeling) i own an mt so I can't speak for certain but Gm's issue was the atf fluid was hydroscopic like brake fluid, meaning it absorbed moisture from the air and in turn would degrade faster than intended causing the shudder. Their repair was to flush and switch from dextron 6 to Mobil one LV HP ATF. Not saying to use that fluid but simply to try changing your trans fluid first before spending the clams for a new torque converter/ transmission. On the many different vehicles i've owned and repaired you'd be surprised how much fluid condition impacts transmission operation. I don't know how it's done on these trucks but atleast a drain and fill with the WS spec atf or a flush with your favourite boutique oil like Amsoil or something and go from there. When you change the fluid you can disconnect the battery if you like to see if it relearns faster afterwards but either way give it 500-1000kms after the fluid change to work some magic. Plus that will give you time to shop around/save money in the event that you do need to replace parts along with think about it with a clear head so you're not panic fixing your truck for alot of money because you're in shock over it
