I'm jumping into the world of GMRS and was just curious who else on here in Texas and the DFW area is on GMRS. IF so, are you just using it for off road, or within the city as well?

I just got my license and am looking at the popular Midland MXT-275 as a setup. Any advice or tips are appreciated.

I only use mine offroad. I've had it on scan mode driving around town, and never catch anything but static.

Makes sense. I used to have a CB many years ago and there was always chatter on it.

It looks like Toyota Jamboree will require GMRS this year.

I went down the rabbit hole looking for 2M & GMRS radios. Oops, FCC doesn't like that (they don't want folks with a GMRS getting on the wrong band, hence two radios these days). The only time I'd need to transmit is to get my sorry ass out of nowhere (i.e., broken down in death valley).

It looking at the Wouxen KG-1000G. I have an RSI Smart Cap, so good ground for a mobile antenna. I no longer fly, but I still like to monitor 121.5 and 406 ELT for emergency broadcasts (i.e., someone in distress). NOAA weather is good (about 162 Mhz); nothing worse than remote camping and not knowing about flash floods. The canyon was sunny and dry; a major storm 40 miles away produced some gulley washers when I was in Arizona.

The FCC does not like anything that is outside of their parameters…. I have my GMRS unit but want a 10m radio and also modify for 11m band (CB) at the same time, this gives both. Everyone says CB is dead but when you hit traffic and trying to figure crap out, the truckers all have this setup and will tell you what they know.

I still have a CB for the traffic/trucker reason. Not only will they tell you what lane you need to be in (handy when pulling a trailer), but they'll also let you know if the service road is moving... if you want to make you own exit.

I have the 275 for my GMRS and have been pretty happy with it. It works well, but sometimes I get static from my solar panel; I need to figure it out before Jambo.

6' bed, so I have slept in there.

Not 100% waterproof. I call it 99%, but in a horrendous downpour, you get drips in there. I keep telling myself to put a go pro in there and drive through a car wash to figure out where it leaks but I typically keep everything in totes back there.

Magnetic Stainless Steel (400 series SS). Simple to leave "gull wings" open on a nice night and use magnets to hold the bug screen in place. It starts pouring middle of the night, I pull the gull wings closed. Latches can not be released from the inside (mfg keeps claiming they will send out new latches but never have).

The roof is suitable for 350 pounds dynamic (driving down a dirt road with an RTT). 700 pounds static (RTT with people). I have two solar panels up there.

WRFN910 checking in, LOL. I too, have both CB and GMRS and use them basically anytime I'm in the truck. The CB stays on ch19 while my GMRS is scanning. I'm using a President Bill CB and an AnyTone AT-779UV setup for GMRS duty.
