Our house had decorative window shutters when we bought it. Someone went through the effort of mounting them on actual hinges. So I'm painting the house on a ladder and release the thingy that held them in place and swing one away from the house. Bats. Lots of bats. Disoriented bats on a sunny summer afternoon. Bats flying, bats falling to the ground. My dog chasing bats. Utter mayhem.

When I first bought the house about six years ago, I heard them in the attic constantly. The attic is open-ish to the garage. Someone put thin wire mesh over the entrance but didn't close it off well around the edges. I could see the tufts of fur from where they squeezed through. I sealed that up better, replaced the side door that they could have easily crawled under, then must have caught 30 mice over the course of a week up there. No problem since - until now.

This time, I could hear them in the corner of the living room - abutting the exterior. I looked outside where the roof of the addition meets this wall and there was a small hole at the corner of the soffit of the addition. I looked in it with my scope and it looked like it led them right into the problem wall. So, I sealed it up. Apparently my investigation was correct, but my thought that they'd be gone during the day to forage for food was not.

It is right next to the pellet stove, so that dries up the room pretty good. It's about 20% humidity in there right now.

We have two, but they can't get to mice in a wall or the attic. They definitely knew something was there though. One sat and stared at that wall for hours just waiting for the mouse to find a way out.

The best mousers exterminate from outside the house. I was having a huge mouse problem. I acquired
a Maine Coon Cat mix who would hunt them outside the house and stack them like cordwood by the back door. Haven’t had a mouse in the house since.

Seems something might be wrong with the pilot. I've had to re-light it several times today. I think after the heat reaches the target temperature, the heater shuts off, but the pilot goes out with it. Maybe a sensor problem? I know if the sensor doesn't detect heat from the pilot's flame, the gas gets cut off.
