Headlights for a 2006

Friend is looking for new headlights for his son’s 2006, any recommendations on best sources for best price? No preference between old and new, just needs to replace a cracked yellow set. Looking for stock.

OEM is the best way to go. Aftermarket are shit…plain and simple. Given that it’s your kid go OEM so he has a quality headlight if you can swing it.

second option look at 2nd gen marketplace for a used OEM set.

 

I received two $50 Amazon gift cards for Christmas, so I bought these, which are really DEPO. Haven't put them on yet because I want to run some silcone (just to make sure) but for my liking it's been too cold. CAPA also brings a sense of quality.

They changed the headlights in 2011.
I think you’ll have a hard time finding a set of used OEM in “good” shape.
You’ll likely be back in the same situations before long. After all, 2011 was 12 years ago.
I think I’d go aftermarket. The key is, to MAKE SURE the rubber boot is installed correctly at the head light socket. And to make sure the signal and marker lights have a good seal.

 

Google OEM replacements, and insert "CAPA" and/or LKQ into the search - made to OEM specs.

Do NOT try to go any cheaper than these DEPO replacements - I had condensation in a 3 year old set, and bought them again - then sold them all because I wanted "a little better focus" because I am old. There are VERY SMALL differences in the DEPO vs. the OEM reflector.

I replaced them with a CAPA set that was "TRD Sport" black tint (you can barely tell). They are LKQ parts, and oddly, I got them through WalMart on-line. the link is now worthless, but I got them for less than OEM.

Projector type lamps are at your own risk. Try reading any headlight review thread by @crashnburn80 .Ultimate Headlight is the main one. Staying close to OEM pattern is his recommendation. I have the Ultimate Mod, and fixed up my battery, and now old man can see clearly.

The cheapest might be the best when it comes to finding OEM LKQ on line. Look for "CAPA Certified" and the reflectors and plastics are of OEM design and spec.

Appreciate all the responses, will pass these along. I’m suspicious of a set that cost $100 compared to OEM new that cost $300+ per side. But that’s because I’m a cynical guy. My friend ultimately has to make the call

 

Here's a CAPA start. Regular replacements start much lower - can't say anything about them.
These are less than I paid for the "sport" version, which was barely worth the tint!

That is understandable.
I got mine as a gift, I refused to buy new ones.
And my father hated seeing the faded lenses when I’d go visit him.

Some guys seem to have trouble with the inner bolts.
But I didn’t have any problems, I went through the fender well with a 10mm flex head ratchet wrench.

Just an updated note for anyone reading this in the future...
I just found out that Toyota put out a Technical Service Bulletin in 2011 to address the concern of the turn signal bulb overheating the headlight lens and discoloring/burning the housing. They did come out with a newer light to address this issue with updated part numbers. If you order the new headlights from a Toyota dealer be sure and use the newer part numbers if you want to get the updated headlights. I wish I would have known this 2 weeks ago when I ordered mine. Apparently, I was sold the older part number lights and not the updated ones.

It appears at this time like several of the toyota dealers online are selling the older units due to a shortage of the replacement models and stating that the newer part numbers were replaced with the older part numbers. However if you read the TSB you will find the opposite is true.

 

I was told they don’t have anymore of the updated lights and are only selling the old ones. Forget what thread I was reading that in. Might have @crashnburn80 ultimate headlight upgrade

 

Good lord! Then again, I'm not at all surprised with them being aftermarket. Just because they look like OEM doesn't mean they will perform like OEM.

And just a word of caution on "CAPA Certified" parts in general. Remember that CAPA is an insurance company run certification program. They "certify" parts as being "just as good as OEM" (in their opinion) because insurance companies don't like paying for OEM parts. Now I ask you, is good enough for your insurance company good enough for you? Not me, but I work in a Toyota dealership Parts department. I get to see the difference between OEM and aftermarket parts almost every day.
