If the weight of the trailer you're towing remains fairly consistent, a weight distributing hitch will be loads better than airbags. They work by taking some of the tongue weight of the trailer and putting it on the front axle. Depending on the hitch, they also provide sway control. I use this one when towing my tacoma and it's pretty amazing. Once I set it up correctly, it dropped the front AND rear of the tundra 1/2" vs just the ass squatting about 2”-3”

I installed ride rite airbags on mine recently. Due to the tongue configuration on my aluma trailer, a distribution hitch would not work (they have to be a-frames or WDH do not work).

Install was about an hour and a half for both sides. Easy to do.

Wish I could go! Thought about heading out Friday morning and staying a night or 2 but just have too much going on right now and just found out I'm going to Costa Rica this summer. Gotta save some duckets! I'll get there some year.

The weight on the front is pretty consistent. We have been towing with your 4Runner. Just see the picture to see what it is doing with our hiker-trailer.

I might have to try this. I don’t think weight distribution would work since I’m using a coupler instead of a hitch.

I was just thinking the same, doesn’t look like a WDH would work for you unfortunately.

Peanut gallery time, I readily accept I may get roasted for this, but... just gauging it. I'm still a noob when it comes to wheeling, alone vs group and when to say "find a different way."

    Came across this:
    20230207_165151.jpg

Having been through here before when it was "dry" (muddy but no standing water) I know that's way deeper than it looks, and also those side banks have eroded and are soft. The right hand side of the puddle has widened by about 2-3 feet since we've been getting rain.
I found a different path a few miles up the road.

Would you have attempted crossing alone in a daily driven, non-lifted 'yota? I kinda thought 50/50... momentum would've carried me through it but probably dragged my front bumper. Slower I risk getting stuck and there's no recovery points and I'm alone.

If I was with people, I'd have sent it. Worst case it's not hard to get pulled out by a buddy.

If there’s any risk of getting stuck and there’s no readily accessible way to self recover, never attempt alone. Better to play it cautious than deal with a headache.

If it was the only way to get to where I was going, and I would otherwise have to turn tail and go home,

yup, woulda went around solely because I truly despise mud like others have said. I've had my fun with it.. Now, I avoid it anytime I come across it.

Unless that was the way to camp and I was with the Homies... :drunk:
