If you are going through all the trouble to convert your truck too 4x4,then do the SAS conversion, the factory 4 wheel front drive on these trucks are garbage.

The hardest part of the conversion is swapping the transmission and fabricating a crossmember for it. It is definitely a lot less trouble than a SAS since everything up front bolts right in.

If you have an access cab or DCSB, you can find a used rear driveshaft fairly easily and modify the carrier bearing support. I have a DCLB that I couldn’t find a fairly priced driveshaft for, so I had my factory driveshaft modified with a 4x4 front flange, slip joint, and kept the carrier bearing in the prerunner location.

Use an FJ/4Runner manual transfer case and cut a hole for the tcase shifter (the shifter will have to be modified to clear the transmission shifter).

I spent a few years gathering all the needed parts, and was lucky that a couple of friends had the majority of parts needed. You can convert it in phases if down-time is a constraint. IMO it was worth the trouble.

these guys are driveshaft pros here in southern cali. Orange county. But if you can find a specialty driveshaft shop, they can do the same. Its cut and weld and balance.
