I have a 2017 Taco. There's nothing they can do to the existing radio.

You can do a direct swap with a newer Tacoma radio, but it would still sound like crap. They are always available on eBay.

For a couple hundred more, get a Sony XAV-AX7000 with the proper harness from Crutchfield.

There is a module you can get on Amazon for $180 that add wireless/wired CarPlay and android auto. Also a thread around here I posted a bunch of screenshots in. I added it to my 2017 but ultimately ended up removing it.

I considered that but at the end of the day it's the crap sound out of the head unit that I can't deal with. For those that just want CarPlay, that's a good option.

I went this route in my ‘17. Sound is much better even reusing stock speakers. Direct fit, full plug and play. Wireless CarPlay. Very happy.

This thing is a piece of shit. Grainy image and shitty sound. So bad I never even tucked it in the dash. Garbage.

A plug and play PX6 Android head unit is your best bang for your buck. Not only do you get wired/wireless Apple Carplay, but you can also download apps like you normally could on a phone or iPad. I've had the Dasaita headunit for about half a year and am thoroughly enjoying it. Boots up fast, carplay connects within seconds of starting, and install is a breeze.
