3d scanner

I just bought and am promptly returning the $10,000 peel 3.
I found the tracking to be far worse than the $1000 einstar. I played with all sorts of exposure and resolution settings on the Peel 3 and it just couldn't hold its tracking for whole vehicle size parts without the use of tracking dots (which I refuse to spend my time applying and removing)
To add to my bad experience with the peel 3, I had to contact 2 different customer support numbers and have a rep remote into my computer just to get the software installed because their website was broken and wouldn't let me download it as intended. Then while using the software I found it to be fairly buggy especially when undoing part of a scan or resetting the scan.
To anyone reading this, try the Einstar before going for a 10k+ scanner. I think you'll be impressed. This is not a paid promotion in any way. I just really think the einstar has some insane value and sadly I haven't found any domestic supplier that comes close in terms of value.

Why is a Chinese company doing so much better than a domestic company?
Perhaps because they taken it upon themselves to track and scan the faces of a billion people from every street corner :*(

$350 !!

Time will tell if its any good, looks like a lot of folks found their other cheap scanner, the Lizard, to be pretty bad. I believe the issues there were on the software side.

Still, for $300 (preorder), I may get one. That is cheap enough for a hobbyist like me to struggle through some difficulties.

 

I am curious how this, and the scanner posted above would compare to my go scan spark…

 

After owning a creality scanner and lots of printers, I have the impression that their focus is to print things you scan. This could change in the future but I doubt the new one will do large items like the spark can.

 

Reviving a bit of an older thread...

There are a few parts of the 3rd gen that I'd love to have 3D scanned models to work from to design various things. I've been using Solidworks professionally for a number of years, and am pretty good at taking rough models/scans and creating high quality dimensionally accurate 3D models from them.

Good 3D scanners are still out of my budget for how often I'd use them, but I can offer to trade some CAD work for high quality scans... Anyone interested?

 

I really like the idea of making a community effort in scanning Tacoma parts. What parts do you want scanned?

 

Three things immediately come to mind:

1. The left hand dash panel that houses switches - specifically the back of it with all of the clips and complex outside shape
2. Under the hood, right hand side (driver's perspective) where the on board air compressor usually gets mounted in models that have this space empty. I'm interested in the mounting locations of this plate and the clearance around it
3. The trim around the head unit, similar to what was at the beginning of this post, but more detail and both sides

4. The side mirror housing, all around to where it mounts on the truck. I'll assume these can be mirrored for left and right.

 

I have a cheap 3d scanner. For some things it works great but for others it can be a real pain to get just right. Can you post a picture and circle the area under the hood you're referring to?

 

Passenger side between the air filter box and the firewall. I'd like to figure out the 3D dimensions of the three mounting studs here, and some of the threaded holes on the inner fender wall.

 

I don't know anything about 3d scanners, but I saw this on my work's surplus auction site. Maybe they'd be of use to someone here?
