That’s not how Toyota rolls. They never go high horsepower = Strung out motor and parts
That’s one of the reasons why BMW ‘s are so unreliable and very expensive to maintain.
Toyota does the polar opposite . They overbuild there stuff and keep the HP and torque numbers much lower than the parts can actually handle and that makes the parts last much longer. I remember reading that the motor in the first gen especially the 5VZFE was so overbuilt on the bottom end that the crank and rods could handle upwards of 1000 HP before having problems.

That is a good point. I almost bought a 19 ZR2 when I got my TRDOR. And sometimes GM can hook you on looks or something flashy. But then I realized my 2nd-gen Taco was plain but treated me so well. Toyota deserves my business. I guess sometimes it's easy to get hyped up from marketing or whatever. I've only had GM products before I bought my Toyota, even though Toyota trucks were always my favorite as a kid. I've had some great GM's and a couple bad ones. And like I mentioned we are waiting on our new Trailblazer, which hopefully is a good little suv. But Toyota usually does things the right way. Almost everyone that I know that has/had them, have always been solid.

The best way I can describe my excitement for the new Colorado is thus:

If you want to understand the difference between Toyota building a care and GM, listen to this episode of This American Life. It is a really fascinating look at US manufacturing (but to be fair, it is getting dated now).

Things in GM might be gradually changing, I don't know and I'm unwilling to find out. What I do know is I learned how to fix cars because my grandfather worked for Ford and we only bought US made cars. When the Chevy Nova (rebadge Toyota Corolla. later called the Geo Prizm) came out from the Nummi plant, we bought one. Put 250k+ miles on it without doing anything but changing the oil. My folks gave it to a grandkid who put another 50K on it before he wrecked it. The entire family is a Toyota family since that car came out. My friends with American cars are always buying newer ones because they start breaking after a couple of years; sometimes not even that long but "it is under warranty."

Toyota has the 2GR-FKS in the Tacoma that is designed to rev higher, I would expect that engine to outlast anything that has forced induction as OE. Toyota has the GR Corolla which is a one off production car, but that's a high out put turbo 3. The new Tundra has the 3.4 TT, which is detuned on lower trims. I doubt if the higher output version isn't detuned from what it's potential numbers could be. Next gen Tacoma will be a turbo 4. Toyota is changing the way they build engines.

I'm not personally a GM fan. I liked the last gen ZR2 as a package, I thought it was a good attempt at a factory tuned offroad midsize in a market that was lacking in the US. Tacoma Pro wasn't really on the same level, and Ford still don't sell a Ranger Raptor in the US, which I think is the Ultimate Midsize Truck of the decade both in styling and performance. I like GM's HD trucks, and don't think the 1/2 tons look bad. I wouldn't mind having a short bed regular cab 1/2 ton with Fox 2.0 lift and a set of new ZR2 take off wheels & tires, now that they share the same pattern.

Now if I could find a clean late model Chevrolet SS sedan, I would definitely pick one of those up. Just to show Corvette owners what a real performance car looks like.

Yeah it won the race and also broke or bent the frame. Kind of hard to judge that one. I wonder how the frame would have done not loaded down with the spare or spares, and an extended cab instead of a crew?

My buddies little brother had one too. Love the fuel mileage, love the power, starting acting weird right before the warranty was about to run out and he dumped it for a Tacoma.

The diesel used a different transmission than the gas (which had issues). Funny to go from a vehicle with transmission issues to one also known for gear hunting and a questionable automatic.

I actually warned him about my frustrations. He said he didn't care. Just wanted something reliable that he could offroad and beat up. He still loves the Tacoma from what my buddy says.

Also I'm not trying to talk the 3rd gen up in the slightest. At this point I begrudgingly buy Toyotas. I think they are overpriced and kind of boring, but I just keep buying them for the drama-free cost of ownership.

I feel you, I think other options on market are just as capable without the odd issues (Frontier forum shows little to no issues with their truck). Will see how the 3rd gen Colorado Canyon do.

I'm considering a Frontier in the future. I'd still keep the Taco.

I have been kicking around selling my 2020 TRD Pro for a 19-22 Colorado ZR2 with the 2.8 Diesel. Friend of mine at work just bought one.

we drive them mostly for work in Kansas and Missouri.

We get out in Kansas on these long hills (yea it’s not flat till western side) and it’s always windy and my Tacoma MPG tanks to about 15-17 MPG

I have the OTT tune on it which made a huge difference

It just flat needs more power and torque. If roads are flat and it’s not windy it’s fine.

His diesel just pulls the hills no problem. Towing his trailer he is getting 18-19 and it’s not deleted.

Only thing that makes me hesitant is the GM reliability.

The Diesel motors are near bullet proof. Of course not made by GM. Diesel has the 6 speed unlike the gas. In 19-22 the injector issues were fixed with newer denso injectors

you delete them and some are getting 30MPG and plus 50 HP and 80 torque

    Any opinions?
Hard decision because my Tacoma has been FLAWLESS.

diesel fuel where I live is about the same as buying premium.

No doubt the Diesel Colorado sounds like a better tool for your needs. Get what works for you. Maybe a 1/2 ton? Tacoma's are great but are not suited for every case use scenario.

Having a 70K major engine failure on my 2006 Colorado that the dealers first didn't know about the service bulletin on (and that I reported the issue within the powertrain warranty anyway), then refused to fix it unless I paid cash up front, then hit me for a surprise bill I didn't authorize and the main office told me to kick rocks...each part of GM blamed the other. No thank you. They feel it's normal to have major engine failure at 70K or less.
