I've got a first gen with the TRD rear locker and also have a Smittybilt winch I'm super happy with. I pulled myself and buddy out of some of the worst mud ever. I think my buddy went in knowing I was going to get him out.

Does anyone have experience with land anchors for winches? My favorite wheeling area is the bottom of a dry lake bed on BLM. The bottom of the lake bed is either muddy or sandy and the sides are rocky from the waves lapping against the shore and causing the soil to erode (when full).

I have 300' of straps and winch line, all added up, but there are times I want to get risky but no tree anchor points.

I've looked at Bush Winch from Australia which is an auger system, and several Pull Pal type systems which resemble a boat anchor.

Whatcha got, how does it work for you?

If you’ve got one of those red farm jacks the insta crowd and Jeepers are so crazy about you can 1000 up them, and actually use it... as a land anchor. Take off the base and ratchet and pound in the rod.
Other than that I’ve used my spare one time I was stuck on the beach with incoming tide. It wasn’t fun burying or cleaning that spare tire and wheel but worked really well

I have a hi-lift, which I think is what you're talking about. My biggest concern is the rocky soil I'd have no chance of pounding anything in. Auger, maybe.

Get a Dansforth anchor. If the slide they dig in. To pull out you just reverse the direction of pull.

I've heard good things about the deadman anchor (https://www.deadmanoffroad.com/), but I'd get tracion aids for that type of environment before any type of earth anchor.

Setting up earth anchors are time and labor consuming vs. tossing some plastic things under your wheels and driving off.

    And mud terrain tires...

Cool idea “IF” you have a great big rock nearby. I’ve stuck the dansforth between two big rock a time or two. But it really shines when their is anything big and heavy handy.

Yep, and for $800 you can buy several Danforths.

It’s sort if like leather pants on a woman. Looks great but when you finally get them off you wonder if all the fuss was worth it.

Watch the above video. Dig a hole, bury it. They're light and easy to store.

Traction aids should still be a first resort, though.

How big a hole, how deep? And just how much now loosened sand do you need to pile on top should I need the maximum pulling power from my winch?

Watched the video. Yea a big enough hole and enough sand and the Hi Lift would have worked.

I haven't tried this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work either... Bury one of those tyvek (I think thats what they’re made of) bags that you get from Home Depot when you order 1000lbs of gravel or sand. You could even use the “handles” with a soft shackle or something to then attach the winch line. You could probably get the bag for free from a construction site throwing it out.
