Thanks. I think the service writer quoted me for all three instead of just the rear. He's brand new, so probably doesn't know WTF he's doing.

$479.00 for just the rear seems a tad high.

Have to check for cut off bin at your place, I’ll look around as well but I only need 3’. I’ll hold off if need be until the stock is a very friendly price.

479 is definitely high for just the rear, but seems about right for all 3 if you’re paying shop rates.

I was planning to stagger them based on how little I use 4WD. I booked with a senior writer, but he was tied up so this kid who looks like he's in middle school ended up booking me in.

Alldata book time for my truck, which SHOULD be very similar to a 2019 is 1.5 hours for the front and rear diff and tcase fluid services. Seems like a lot for oil unless they're at $200/hr for labor

$150.00/hr for labor. I don't know the cost for the oil or the amount. Isn't it something like 75 weight oil?

It is on 2nd gens, SAE75. 75w-90 is common replacement for SAE75. I'm pretty sure SAE75 is pricey though. I think you should need about 6-7qts of oil, possibly more because you have a 3rd gen

Maybe, but that's still seems high for draining and refilling the rear differential.

It's been a long time since I did one, but as I remember it I removed the drain plug, let the oil drain, replaced the plug, refilled the differential, replaced the fill plug and was done.

Yea the 1.5 hours time is for front and rear diffs and the tcase. Each book at .5 hours for 2nd gens. Just the rear should be .5 hour labor and (for 2nd gens at least) 2.6qts of oil

I'd be okayish with $479.00 for all three. A bit high, but dealers have a lot of overhead compared to independent shops. I know that Toyota sets the number of flat rate hours as well.

Well, I'm not going to whine about it and the truck runs fine so I'll revisit that another time.

Thanks to all for the information.

It is high, just not outrageous for a dealership. The fluids are pricey but it’s just drain and refill. Getting fluids back in can be a bit of a struggle but it’s not a difficult project. Mod day in your future? That could
Be banged out quick. For a drain and refill, that is a lot of money. My Ferd requires you to pull the cover and reseal, no drain plug so I could at least see some additional labor but the Tacoma is an easy job.

What about t case? I haven’t looked that one up yet but is it the same deal - drain and fill?

Yeah I had to check if he was another Ford owner in here - you're outnumbering us now! :D

Drain and fill rear diff is a couple bags. I like the bags for the oil, I think for a Tacoma it's about 30$ in oils, and I think the front and TC are ABOUT the same, I think the TC has some more oil in it. It's just a bit more steps for those.

For the rear you need a 20-something wrench, I can't remember the size, but it's unlikely your bog-standard home mechanic has one. I had to get one from HF.

Shade under 500 for all 3 I can see that, you're talking about 100$ or so in fluid alone.

Yep, easy peasy. Hardest part is getting the nozzle into some of the fill ports. But now, oil suppliers are putting the fluids in bags, making it much, much easier!

biggest tip I can give you though, get the fill plug free BEFORE draining the fluid.

Yup. Someone correct me if I am wrong, I don't THINK it's more than a fill and drain plug, the ATF has a drain, fill, and fill level plug to deal with. I think the TC is just drain and fill, there's no overfill plug.

My memory is a bit faded on how I did the last one, which wasn't for a Toyota. As I recall I had a pump or something with a bent nozzle. Fill until oil comes out the fill hole.

A mod day could be possible, depending on when and where.

I think that's how the rear was. I know the ATF fill has the 3.

In searching, I found this, some dude hooked up a tank sprayer. I think that's f'in genius.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ferential-transfer-case.671730/#post-23588375

But yes, all 3 diffs/TC have just a drain and fill plug, no overfill plug (according to another thread I found too).
