And to add, ‘some’ cases people with new hybrid tundra aren’t getting much of any better than the outgoing gen. A lot of variable and driving habits can vary but I don’t think it will be anything to brag about with real world vs Toyota suggested numbers. there will be people like 3rd gen posting 28+ mpg blah blah. It will happen with 4th gen also people posting a wide range of numbers

Im not sure where everyone gets that a battery will only cost 2k.

I had my battery replaced in my Ct200h this year at Lexus. The Ct200h is practically a Prius, in fact they got the battery from a Toyota dealer. Cost, 8k, this is for an OEM battery installed. This was at 95k miles and 7 years. Most people will go to a Toyota Dealer and get there's replaced with a factory battery and not a refurbished one. I for one would never trust a refurbished battery.

Luckily for me this was covered under warranty. Also lucky for me I should get at least another 95k miles out of the car. Other than that my hybrid is very reliable with little to no maintenance.

I would say the battery will need to be replaced at least once and should be taken into consideration when buying.

For the turbos any mechanic can replace or rebuild one, it's not that hard. I would count that as maintenance like a timing chain some last forever some need to be changed. Probably easier to swap a turbo though.

if this is true I’m avoiding the hybrid not worth the little mpg gains, and the upfront cost. I feel like the power gains are exaggerated too probably

I pulled the 2k from when we did my buddies Prius, he got quotes around 2k-2.5k installed for a refurb one. We did it our selfs for 1.2k not hard at all. If some people want to go to a dealership and pay much more thats on them.. a battery is pretty simple and easy to refurbish no reason not to trust them

Thanks for the info. But, I suspect the replacement under warranty part is key to your perspective. No skin, no worries. Your perspective may change when your wallet is ripped a big fat hole. Checking the interwebs, I see the going rate for new batteries for your car to be half with warrantied replacement from third parties.

This is similar to Apple products. You can get the Apple "experience" for failed products. Or a more reasonable, even more reliable, competent service from a third party. Now Apple and many manufacturers (even John Deere) are moving to make it increasingly harder for third parties to work on their products.

Maybe you are right that most people would get it from a dealer. But, I submit that the "most people' demographic you are referring to will have already sold/traded their vehicle before the warranty expired. Like most Apple users. Meanwhile, others like here at TW or myself have no qualms going outside or even doing it themselves. Because 4K difference is enough motivation for me.

I would think most TW members would do it themselves as it is not a hard job. But I would question quality of a refurbished battery or third party. If you could get one for 2k like someone else mentioned quality could not be close to an original Toyota battery.

I do agree most people would sell or trade in by then and if not this could play a big part in them doing so.

It still does not deter me, I am going to wait till 2025 as I am not ready to purchase, but as of now I am planning to Trade in the XRunner for a TRD pro

Anytime you add turbos, batteries, electric motors and more electronics you will have higher repair costs.
Question is will resale values hold being we have more repair items later in the vehicles life now ?

Not for the new Tundra or F150. Space is so tight in the engine compartment, the entire cab has to be removed to repair or replace the turbochargers.

Not sure about anyone else, but once I see the cab of my new $80,000 pickup setting in the floor, I'm gonna be done with that truck!

Wow, what a spectacular pissing contest! Definitely lives up to TW standards, that's for sure! Was it this "good" when Gen3 was introduced? I was here starting in 2014 with my gen2 and there were plenty of nay sayers at the time but this seems to be next level.

My $0.02 for this thread: I went Tundra this go around (2023 hybrid, March 1 build date). Gave my Taco to my teenager so I'm still here on TW since I get to maintain it, lol. Some facts based on my experience:

    • Tundra hybrid is for performance not mileage. Hybrid kicks in on acceleration and load, and doesn't have "EV mode" to cruise around in battery only. I'm still less than 1000 miles and haven't cracked 17.6mpg on the dash meter yet.
    • Hybrid performance ROCKS. Lots of grunt, pulls hard, does 85mph without me even noticing, and the transition from gas mode to Hybrid is seamless. If I were considering a 2024 Taco I would get the Hybrid, no question.
    • So the turbos/batteries may not make it to 300k miles... so what? Neither will the water pump, alternator (do I even have one??), bushings, ball joints, brake booster, motor mounts, etc... the list goes on. I maintain my vehicles and if it looks like something will be a problem down the road I'll dump the vehicle and get something else.
Not talking out of my ass, I bet my own money $70k on this tech and Toyota, and would do no different if I had stayed in the Taco ownership zone.

17 mpg, upper left readout. Hope it improves after break in, but TBH this is what I was getting out of my 2017 Taco anyways so nothing has really changed for me fuel economy wise.

Everyone remembers that famous Toyota Dealer phrase: "Toyota says that's normal."

This thread can be solved by simply waiting 3 years to see what issues happen to the early models like the 3rd gen.

SR has 228 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque
    SR5 without hybrid 270 hp and 310 lb-ft.
Have you seen the pictures of the engine compartment ?
    There is no room.
There is an unbelievable amount of stuff in there.

I’m sure they will find a way.

I know someone is going to buy one and upgrade the turbos, blow off, exhaust, etc..

The I-force seems like it could be the perfect platform to start from.

Some people are stuck in the 80's. Modern turbo 4's are incredibly reliable. First year production issues do occur, but are nothing like the past. Will the the turbo 4 last 250k miles without a rebuild? Who knows? And, 98% of new buyers won't keep them that long so it should not be a concern.

Will I like the turbo 4? I reserve that judgment until I drive one.

The Prius vehicles are extremely reliable maybe more reliable than the tundra 4.7. They routinely come up in the longest held vehicle statistics.

I think the hybrid motor takes a lot of stress of the ICE system.

Maybe you should continue to compare Ford engines and turbos to Toyota's engines and turbos to keep the bullshit rolling.

Sorry buddy but a turbo won’t outlive a Toyota engine and neither will a battery pack. So if you have those two things someone will be paying out of pocket to fix or replace the turbo and battery at some point before the motor dies. If you don’t have a turbo or batteries you do t have to worry about that added expense. Valid concerns and frankly quite simple to understand. Sorry you are having trouble grasping common sense.
